First Lady Michelle Obama graces the Newsweek cover and tackles childhood obesity.

First Lady Michelle Obama covers this week’s issue of Newsweek Magazine. While she looks gorgeous in a blue scoop-neck dress (a piece that was designed by Narciso Rodriguez), she penned an article for the magazine that discusses her campaign against childhood obesity.

Since the beginning of President Obama’s administration, childhood obesity has been on the top of the First Lady’s agenda. She travels all over the country, bringing awareness to the health issue.

The issue hit home for Obama when she was informed by the family doctor that her daughters were at risk of reaching obesity.

Here are a couple of bits and pieces from her article:

“For many kids today, those walks to school have been replaced by car and bus rides. Afternoons playing outside have been replaced with afternoons inside with TV, videogames, and the Internet. And with many parents working longer hours, or multiple jobs, they don’t have time for family meals around the table anymore.

And let’s be honest with ourselves: our kids didn’t do this to themselves. Our kids don’t decide what’s served in the school cafeteria or whether there’s time for gym class or recess. Our kids don’t choose to make food products with tons of sugar and sodium in supersize portions, and then have those products marketed to them everywhere they turn. And no matter how much they beg for fast food and candy, our kids shouldn’t be the ones calling the shots at dinnertime. We’re in charge. We make these decisions.”

While some critics suggest that Michelle Obama’s campaign may cause people to focus too much empasis on a child’s diet and ultimately place too much pressure on children, I honestly think it’s about time we take responsibility for a problem that is affecting the health of the children of this country. And I don’t see how anyone can be mad at that.
