Migraine headaches are some of the most painful things that a person can experience. These headaches can be very debilitating and cause a person to miss days of work, school and other important events. There are many factors that can trigger migraine headaches including stress, strong odors, hormones, dietary changes and smoke. Luckily for migraine headache sufferers, there are several ways to decrease your chances of getting one.

1. Skipping Meals Is A No-No

Not consuming the standard three meals a day is not a good thing for headache suffers to do. That lack of nutrients can lead to a dreadful headache. Even if you do have a busy schedule, find a way to have healthy snacks such as an apple or orange throughout the day if you can not manage to squeeze in three full course meals. You should also not wait too far into the day to consume your first full meal as this can also trigger migraine headaches.

2. Work It Out

In addition to being a great stress reliever, engaging in physical activity on a daily basis can minimize the number of migraine headaches a person has. Although exercising is a good way to prevent migraine headaches, too much exercise can cause them to occur. Adjust your workout routines according to what works best for you.

3. Watch The Caffeine

Drinking too many products that are high in caffeine can cause migraine headaches. Substitute caffeine drinks for water, juices or caffeine free drinks. If you must have caffeine to get you through the day, be sure that you consume no more than two servings per day.

4. Don’t Look Into The Light

Migraine headaches can be triggered when a person is exposed to bright lights. If your eyes are sensitive to bright or flashing lights, be sure not to look directly at them as they can cause migraines. Wearing sunglasses when you are outside can decrease one’s changes of suffering a migraine.

5. Get A Good Night’s Sleep

Getting an adequate amount of rest can limit the number of migraine headaches one has. Going to bed around the same time each night can also decrease migraine occurrences. It is almost unrealistic for many of us to get a full eight hours of sleep every night but that should be our goal. It can work wonders for migraine sufferers.

Some individuals have to take over the counter medications to stop their migraine headache pain. There are even some instances were a person has to take prescription medication to control their migraines. Before you resort to OTC and prescription medication, take heed to these tips. They could save you a trip to the doctor’s office or the pharmacy.
