The Right View of Wealth: Is It Really Ungodly to Be Rich?

Why do Christians fear wealth?

By: Amanda Anderson

We hear about the “corruption” of mega churches all the time, and the questionable pastors that continuously preach prosperity to their congregation. They sell many books on growing wealth and overcoming debt and poverty. What I have noticed during conversations with believers regarding money is that most believers believe that it is Ungodly to be wealthy. They believe that God does not wish for His people to be wealthy and that Christians should spend their entire lives struggling financially. And I ask…where did they get such a ridiculous belief?

The first problem is the scripture that people can’t seem to get right. Christians are notorious for saying “Money is the root of all evil.” Incorrect! The bible clearly states, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” Why is this particular scripture so misconstrued and tortured?

Let’s be honest here. What can a poor person really do for God’s people? Can you provide funds for their children to go to college if you are broke? Can you provide assistance to other countries battling Aids if you and your congregation have no money? Can you employ many members of your congregation during a recession if your church doesn’t make any money?

If it takes money to supply the needs of the people, why on Earth should God’s people strive to be poor? Who can you really help by being poor?

And let’s be clear, life is what you make it. So if you are poor and struggling financially, won’t that make your life harder than most?

Think about your children and the next generation, if God honored the servant who multiplied his seeds, won’t he honor believers who multiple their earnings and leave something for future generations?

I’m not trying to defend these rich pastors, but I am challenging you to change the way you think about money. No where in the bible does it require believers to struggle in poverty, so why on Earth are you striving to stay poor?

  1. This is amazing! Thank you for writing this and not be afraid to say the truth. Too many Christians have the wrong views on wealth. Well done.
