Jay-Z Goes Off About People Saying He Only Owns Less Than One Percent of the Brooklyn Nets

Jay-Z might have a legendary rap career, but for the last few years, he’s been praised for his entrepreneurial and business achievements. Not only does Jigga own his own successful clothing line, but he’s opened up his own chain of nightclubs, and even owns part of the Brooklyn Nets. But despite those achievement, there have been many who pondered how much ownership he really has of the basketball team. Not too long ago, the gossip blogs began to speculate that Jay-Z only owned less than one percent of the team, and they claimed the rapper was drastically exaggerating his influence over the team. This rumor was bought back to life recently when Kanye took a shot at Kim Kardashian’s ex husband Kris Humphries in a song, when he rapped that he ought to have Jay “drop him from the team.”

Jay-Z has never really addressed the rumors, but at one of his recent performances, he finally addresses the rumors in the middle of his performance at the Sunday and Monday night performances at Barclays, right before he began to perform his hit 99 Problems.

Here’s what Jay-Z said:

“First of all, I don’t know where they get that number from … but it’s not about me, it’s about ya’ll. It doesn’t matter what percentage. The story is that a black kid from a single parent house made it from [the Marcy Projects] about six minutes away from here. So the fact that I have any ownership in this franchise is f-cking amazing. The fact that I have any ownership in this venue is f-cking amazing. Don’t let them diminish your accomplishment or dim your shine. It’s f-cking amazing.”

  1. I always thought it was silly that people debated this, it doesn’t really matter how much of the team he owns. He still owns part of the team. He’s doing something a lot of black people will never be able to do. No hate here.

  2. Well said. I don’t know what it is about him and his wife, but they really strike a chord in some people. People will always try to minimize their success, just like the commentator above me. Smh.

    1. Hey hon,

Funny that you mention that, but we’re in the middle of investigating that too. Something is definitely up for real this time. We’ll try to have something up soon, we just don’t want to post the wrong information.

  3. Totally LOVED his response and thought the same thing when I read the beginning of the story. Crabs in the barrel…
