Beyonce might be one of today’s biggest stars in the music industry, but that didn’t happen without the help of her father Mathew Knowles. The singer credits her father for quitting his sales job to help her launch her music career, and he is the one that even helped Destiny’s Child become one of the top-selling girl groups of all time. Mathew knew what it would take for Beyonce to become a huge solo star, so he pushed her to practice plenty and focus tremendously on her stage presence, and eventually becoming a full fledge entertainer. Although Mathew’s methods helped Beyonce sells millions of albums with Destiny’s Child and as a solo performer, their relationship got rocky once she became an adult.

The next installment of Oprah’s Next Chapter features Beyonce, and Oprah’s asking the singer some of the tough questions that’s been on everyone’s minds.

When asked what went wrong with her working and personal relationship with her father, Beyonce tells Oprah:

“It took a while for me and my dad to have an understanding. When I turned 18 and started handling my business more, he went into shock. And we had our issues. I’d say ‘No’ to something, and he’d book it anyway.

“Then I’d have to do it because I’d look bad [if I didn’t]. We would fight sometimes, and it took about two years, to when I was 20, for him to realise, “Oh, she is an adult now, and if she doesn’t wanna do something, I can’t make her do it.

“I think one of the biggest reasons I decided it was time for me to manage myself because at some point you need your support system and you need your family.

“When you’re trying to have an everyday conversation with your family you have to talk about scheduling and you have to talk about your album and performing and touring. It’s just too stressful and it really affects your relationship….I wanted my dad.

“It was hard. I had to sacrifice my relationship with my dad. It was stressful, sad, difficult time, but I had to let go.”

When asked if she did manage to get her dad back, Beyonce says:

“I didn’t get my dad back, but I had to let go.”

  1. There would be no Beyonce without Matthew. I am the biggest Bey fan in the world so this is not hate driven. I’m also a father and I know what kids will do and say because they are not necessarily mature and want to do what they want to do. I just think that kids don’t recognize the importance of their parents until they are gone. This guy quit his job to support his daughter. I KNOW that he put things that he wanted to do personally on the back burner for his child. This is what you have to do to be successful. Her work ethic came from him, her dedication to succeeding in this industry came from him. He had the vision. This isn’t what I think, this is what I know. So I’m probably not ever going to co-sign a child distancing him/her self from their parent regardless what happens.

  2. Understanding where she’s coming from…..she did the right thing….NOW THEY CAN BUILD THEIR RELATIONSHIP BACK TO FATHER & DAUGHTER….that’s what she wants….family & business are not always a good mix…..
