As we reported recently, reality television star and business woman Kandi Burruss is under fire for releasing a gospel song and duet with Marvin Sapp. “Stay Prayed Up” is doing well on iTunes and recently landed the number one spot for gospel singles, however, Kandi still has her share of critics who are slamming her for going Gospel. According to some of Kandi’s critics, she shouldn’t be recording gospel songs because she sells “adult” toys and she is “shacking up” with her fiancé Todd Tucker. Kandi has already made it clear that she is not going to let the criticism get to her because she made sure to prepare herself for the backlash, however, it appears that Marvin Sapp is disappointed that Christians are slamming Kandi for recording a song that encourages prayer for sinners.

After one of his followers questioned him about it on his Facebook page, the pastor opted to respond and clapped back at believers who have a problem that he and Kandi have recorded a song about prayer during tough times.

He writes:

Usually I don’t respond to people about things like this however I must this time. The problem with many in the church is 1.) that we major in minors and 2.) ignorant (not well studied) of scripture. Lets deal with the first, This woman who was an ex R&B singer that sells sex toys and live with her man decided on a show that reaches 10 million viewers per showing (believers and unbelievers) to sing about,,,, Not sex toys, drugs or living with a man but PRAYER!!!!!! and the saints are upset. The lyric says, “I stay prayed up, that gets me by, that how I made it through my darkest time, see I’m a sinner and thats no lie, but thank God my prayers are heard because he knows I try” Wow!!!!! nothing elicit or comprising about the lyric…. So lets look at how Jesus dealt with the sinner….. From my study of scripture the only people he checked was the church (religious people of that day) however the sinner he consistently showed COMPASSION!!!!!!!

Examples…… Woman caught in the ACT of adultery Also the Woman at the well……. Never exposed them publicly, dealt with them privately. We as believer major in minors…… So caught up in the messenger that we are missing the message “Staying Prayed UP”. Now I close with this…Everyone that God used in scripture was flawed and or had struggles…. Let me call the roll….. Moses was a murderer, Rahab was a harlet (whore), David was a murder/adulter and still considered a man after Gods own heart, Peter was a cutting cusser however was in the inner circle of Jesus, Paul was a murderer and made many blaspheme against God however wrote 2/3 of the NT, He spoke through a Donkey and if we decide to be quite rocks will cry out… We say we are christians which means being Christ-like but question peoples motives that model his behavior….The bible speaks about witnessing and that you need to be wise to win souls and Paul says I became all things to all men that I might win some…. Compromise was never done here nor do I condone her life style or life choices and keeping 100 you don’t know the off camera conversation we had. Again big picture 10 million people at 1 time were challenged to PRAY in difficult times WOW!!!! Thats Awesome and Ministy….. PS Didn’t spell check because I’m late to a meeting…. Be Blessed

Despite the backlash, Kandi’s song is still doing well on iTunes. It looks like she may have another hit on her hands.

  1. People need to have a seat. None of us can even go one day without sinning! Let this girl sing her song. The message is positive, so what’s the problem?

  2. As great as his message was, people will still have something to say. We’re all sinners yet we like to make ourselves feel better by putting other people down.

  3. And whoever said something is a sinner themselves. Being a Christian doesn’t mean you will be without flaws. Why don’t people understand that?

  4. I know we are not supposed to shoot the messenger but umm Kandi is just reeking of someone who is just using God’s word to make a quick buck.

  5. I get what he’s saying but I think people are just skeptical about WHY Kandi made the song. Kandi does everything for money these days. Some people just question if she’s using Gospel as another one of her many hustles. I don’t care either way, I just see both sides of the coin.

  6. They need to stop addressing this. The song is doing well and there’s nothing anyone can do about judgmental “Christians.”

  7. People who always want to do GOD’s job of JUDGEMENT I pray for them. I don’t believe God would be happy that us brothers and sisters are tearing each other down especially when we are praising HIS name. And gospel singers are sinners too! They all have a past and have secrets in the present and their intentions just might be for financial gain as well. Only GOD knows who’s REALLY about HIM. Will all this said, people need to leave Kandi alone!

  8. Who cares if she is doing it for her own benefit? God’s word never comes out void, no matter the deliverer. If one person is saved from this song, it has done what it was destined to do. #ijs

  9. I see some of you are talking about her making a profit. So do you think the rest of the gospel industry is singing for free? Have a seat and cut it out!
