Nicki Minaj Talks Being Bullied & Says Letting go of ‘Barbie’ Image is Scary

Nicki Minaj is without a doubt one of today biggest female rappers and has embarked on the kind of epic success that most female rappers could only dream of. Only a few years in the game as an artist with a deal, Nicki has landed big time deals with companies like MAC and Macy’s; and she’s a new judge on American Idol, one of the most popular talent shows in the world (although the show is experiencing a drop in ratings this season). Regardless, Nicki is ready to transform her over the top image, and she’s done that already by firing her hairdresser and wardrobe stylist. She’s even let go of the bright-colored wigs, and in her recent photo shoot, she looked pretty fabulous without all the gimmicks.
Nicki is the cover girl for the April issue of Elle, and in the issue, the female rapper reveals that she was bullied as kid something terrible and she even admits that changing up her image now is pretty terrifying for her.
On switching up her image and letting go of the gimmicky bright colored wigs and outrageous outfits, known as her “Barbie” persona:
“To go in front of the camera, without pink lips or big ol’ crazy lashes—you know, nothing—I felt naked. It was scary! So this photo shoot was a real accomplishment in my eyes.”
On being bullied as a kid, Nicki says:
“I went through a lot of bullying early on. Girls made my life a living hell.”
