Being Mary Jane ratings are in. Actress Gabrielle Union made it clear during her recent appearance on “Oprah’s Next Chapter” that it’s tough being a black actress and continuously securing work, but she’s managed to secure a lead role on BET’s new series “Being Mary Jane.” Although Union recently caused a stir after suggesting her role on the show is better than “Scandal” (she lost out to Kerry Washington to play Olivia Pope), if the ratings are any indication, BET may have secured its very own hit show and now stand a fighting chance against OWN’s increasing popularity. As we reported recently, OWN has been beating out the network pretty drastically ever since Tyler Perry launched two new hit shows. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the pilot/movie for “Being Mary Jane” pulled in around 4 million viewers. The site writes:

Being Mary Jane, a new series starring Gabrielle Union, saw its 90-minute pilot debut at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday to an impressive 2.0 rating with adults 18-49 and 4 million viewers. Among the targeted demographic, only NBC’s America’s Got Talent (2.3 adults rating) bested Being Mary Jane across all of television.

While the series won’t debut until 2014, the feature got a strong sampling thanks in no small part to the return of The Game. BET’s flagship scripted series kicked off its sixth season with a 1.7 18-49 rating and 3.6 million viewers at 10 p.m. A midnight encore of the episode even managed to pull in an additional 2.7 million viewers and a 1.2 demo rating.

Congrats to Gabrielle Union. Will you be watching in January when the first season premieres?

    1. Haters? I don’t think we have much to hate on. We just prefer more talented actresses to stan for…you know, like Kerry Washington. The one person Gabby wishes she could be. LOL!

    2. You think most women with a brain want a man who would cheat on his wife and demonstrates over and over again that he doesn’t have morals? Believe me, real women don’t want D Wade. We actually feel sorry for Gabby and her desperation.

  1. I really wish you all would learn how to separate someone’s personal life from their work. People make mistakes, but their craft shouldn’t suffer for it. SMH.

    1. I didn’t realize sleeping with a married man was a mistake. I thought consensual sex is well you know, INTENTIONAL. My bad.

  2. The show was good. What happened with D Wade has nothing to do with the show itself. Support black actresses people.

  3. They didn’t get one rating from my house. If it’s a hit good for her but I ain’t supporting her and it’s messed up she shaded Kerry Washington and if you look on Kerry’s instagram she is telling people to watch MaryJane.
