The Quad Recap: Dr. Fletcher’s Husband Has Had Enough

Noni’s time in the marching band as first chair is already in jeopardy.

Noni was promoted to first chair saxophone in Georgia A&M’s marching band after she decided not to talk to police about a previous hazing incident that involved her former roommate.

However, her position may be taken away because during practice, she is having a difficult time learning a new routine. She is told that she has 72 hours to get it right, or she’s out.

Dr. Fletcher thinks Bojohn is the key to more publicity for the school but Coach Hardwick isn’t sold.

Dr. Fletcher (Eva) shows up to Coach Hardwick’s office to ask him to start newcomer Bojohn as quarterback for the upcoming game, but since the school has lost the last three games, he’s not convinced that would be the best move.

However, Eva thinks the move is right because doing so will get more media coverage for the team and therefore make it possible for the school to no longer only be known for their marching band. With Bojohn also being white, she thinks it’s a very good look for the school.

She tells the coach to think it over.

The DA has good news.

Eva is surprised to see the DA in her office upon arrival, but happy to learn that Cedric is being released from jail because there is no evidence that he killed his girlfriend.

Eva is happy to hear the news, but disappointed when the DA rejects dropping the student’s arrest records.

Bojohn’s father is already pressuring him to transfer to another school.

Bojohn decided to attend Georgia A&M and play on the football team to have a second chance at possibly getting into the NFL after having some troubled years, but his father wants him out of a HBCU as quickly as possible.

He urges his son to start the next game and he’s already called up journalists and scouts from other colleges to be at the game. Bojohn’s father pressures him to have a breakout game so he can transfer soon. However, the student thinks it’s too soon but agrees to do what his father has asked.

Cecil takes an interest in Noni’s marching band dilemma.

Seeing as he’s responsible for promoting Noni to first chair, Cecil meets with her in his office and demands she shows him the routine she’s been struggling with.

He then tell her to try the routine on a box because keeping balance seems to be her issue.

She continues to mess up the routine, so he tells her to leave his office and practice on her own.

Cedric’s relationships with his mother and his roommate are strained.

When released from prison, Cedric finds his mother waiting outside for him. He’s upset with her because she only came to see him once while he was in jail and abruptly left during the visit after she learned how much trouble he was in. Cedric now feels like he can’t trust his mother but when he tells her he wants to drop out of school and go back to Chicago, she refuses to allow him to leave. She explains to him that the school is his last chance to get out and succeed in life. He’s also hurt to learn that his girlfriend’s funeral was the day before his release.

Although his roommate is happy to see him released from jail, Cedric is resentful because his roommate’s father refused to help him get out of jail. Despite his father being a black lawyer, he labeled Cedric as a “thug” and had no interest in his case. This infuriated Cedric so he is now taking it out on his roommate although his roommate begged his father to help.

After Cedric calls his roommate “blue blood,” it’s clear that their relationship has been damaged.

Eva cuts off her boy toy but it’s too late to save her marriage.

Eva has decided that she wants to work on her troubled 18 year marriage, so she tells the grad student she’s been having an affair with that it’s over.

Not too long after she ends her affair, she is served divorce papers. She angrily calls her husband and leaves a very nasty voicemail:

“You’re nothing but a coward, a piece of sh*t coward who will be living in a studio apartment by the time my lawyers are done with you!” – Eva

After she runs into her daughter Sydney on campus, she questions why she didn’t show up to her community service. They exchange some words and Sydney tells her that she and her father are done with Eva. This angers Eva, and she lets her daughter know she is seconds away from laying hands on her. Sydney coldly reminds her that she doubts she will do anything since they are on campus in front of so many people. Eva walks away.

Noni loses first chair.

Despite practicing hard for many hours, she just couldn’t get the routine down. Cecil demotes her to fourth chair. After he fusses her out, he appears to have some sort of medical issue discreetly. Possibly signs of a nervous breakdown?

Noni is upset to lose first chair but keeps practicing the routine anyway.

Bojohn’s game doesn’t go the way he expected.

Bojohn was put in the game but fumbles the ball on a play he called. However, one of his teammates recovered the ball and Bojohn was able to block so the teammate could score a touchdown.

Although he’s happy his team won and ended their losing streak, his father is outraged. He threatens physical violence if Bojohn ever “embarrasses” him again.

Old habits die hard for Eva.

Now that her husband is out, Eva has rekindled her relationship with her boy toy. Before they sleep together again, she asks him if he loves her and he tells her that he will never stop loving her.

    1. I wanted her to work out her issues with her husband but if that’s not going to happen, I’d like to see her with the coach as well. He’s older, a good father and very grounded with a good career. Besides s-x, there’s not much that student can even do for her.
