Underground Recap: Cato Finally Reveals What Side He’s Really On + Rosalee Gives Birth

Harriet meets one of the Secret Six.

A strange man knocks on the door of the hideout and Harriet answers with a gun in his face.

The man of the Secret 6 brings news of a potential uprising involving slaves. Harriet agrees with the idea however, she seems reluctant to join the raid.

Daniel tells his story.

Daniel sits down with Georgia, Elizabeth, Noah and Rosalee and tells them how he taught himself how to read. He also explained how the master used lye to blind him as punishment for teaching the other slaves.

“The master thought it was poetic.” -Daniel

Elizabeth, Georgia, Noah and Rosalee debate how to rescue his family. However, Daniel tells the foursome that his master is splitting his family up by first keeping his son in the big house while prepping to send his wife and daughter down south.

Georgia wants to buy Daniel’s family members, but Elizabeth thinks it’s a terrible idea to reward the person who visually impaired Daniel.

They decide to go save Daniel’s family with Elizabeth’s tactics, which includes a slave revolt and plenty of guns.

Cato “inspires” Patty.

“I will make sure that the legend of Patty Cannon lives,” is what he tells a prostitute as she is getting dressed. He also implies that Patty and her crew are planning a raid on the safe house in Ohio to kidnap Harriet.

Cato has a plan, but it’s still unclear which side he’s on.

Ernestine and August bond while on the run.

August and Ernestine stopped at August’s property where his wife and son are buried. He takes a swig of his alcohol and throws it at the ground in disgust. Ernestine then walks to him and attempts to give him his opiates to sniff but he forcibly declines the offer.

“Here! We can do it together.” -Ernestine

August eventually caves in and starts sniffing the drug-filled rag. Since it’s his first time, he slowly lays out in front of the graves of his wife and slaves. Ernestine takes off while August appears to be too high to catch her. However, he eventually gets back up and attempts to find her. The two end up in a cotton field. In a sequence, Ernestine stands and seems confused as she hears voices. She comes to her senses as August comes near and runs off into the nearby woods.

All of a sudden, August begins to hear voices and his world begins to spin around. However, he snaps out of it.

They end up running onto a plantation, the Macon plantation. The two stop in horror as they see the big house has been burned down.

Ernestine asks August, “What now?”

The next day, Ernestine wakes up in the woods near the Macon Plantation. She walks near August and he has his rifle pointed to his head. She sits next to him and consoles him. She tells him how she tried to drown herself but was saved by others. While she isn’t sure of saving August, she stops him. As Ernestine walks away with his gun, he just stares into the distance.

Rosalee and James get back on good terms.

James asks Rosalee if they will ever see their momma again. He doesn’t think they will.

“The world is too big for momma.” -James

Rosalee tells him Ernestine is the smartest person she knows and she will find her way back to them. James then lays on Rosalee and feels his nephew kicking.

Rosalee and Noah prep for the rescue mission.

Rosalee breaks the silence between her and Noah by saying “I am like my father… I am weak. I did these things out of fear once I learn I was with child… How do I let that fear go?”

“You don’t.” -Noah

Noah consoles Rosalee and tells her how he interpreted his freedom dream.

“I see how that small that dream was… Seeing the world how I see him; special, free… we can’t stop now. We got to see this to the end.” – Noah

Rosalee tells Noah she loves him, however Noah tells her, “I don’t know if I can forgive you.” He then walks out of the room.

Elizabeth, Noah and their abolitionists free slaves in Kentucky, including Daniel’s family.

Noah, Elizabeth and Jon Brown’s crew prep to raid plantations for guns.

They are strategizing on how to attack the plantations in Kentucky. Noah mentions that they only have three hours to free these slaves, get Daniel’s son from the big house and make it back over the Ohio River. He also lets them know that the house slaves will need to be convinced to leave due to the status on the plantation.

They make it over into Kentucky and Daniel’s plantation. They sneak into the big house with help from the house slaves and Noah sneaks into the master’s room to get Daniel’s son. He gets the baby but almost wakes up the master. The others are going around, but Elizabeth is told the master has one of his house slaves hostage. He has an iron pick to her throat. They realize this is a diversion and Elizabeth comes into the room and shoots him with a rifle.

Later on, Noah and Daniel and all of the slaves head down to the river but the Kentucky coalition chases them down.

“They always say the road to freedom is paved in blood, but it don’t got to be ours… Today, I choose to fight to return to my family.” -Noah

This inspires the slaves and they set off an offensive against the coalition in Kentucky coming after them. They take them down one by one but slaves are hit by gunfire.

Casualties on Noah’s side seem small as Daniel is rejoined with his family and they are able to cross the river.

Patty declares war on the safe house.

Rosalie, Georgia and James come under fire from Patty’s crew. Georgia blocks the door. They want Rosalee, AKA The Black Rose to surrender so they can use her to get Harriet.

“Rosalee, we’re waiting!” -Patty

Georgia tells Rosalee to run down to the river. Georgia also has the others in the house to raise arms against Patty.

Rosalee and James are in the tunnels under the safe house but Patty’s crew is in there, thanks to Cato’s spying. Rosalee calls him a sellout.

“I ain’t never been a n—-r. I’m just Cato.” – Cato to Rosalee

A battle ensues upstairs as Cato traps Rosalee in the tunnels. Cato tells Rosalee that she is the key to find Harriet. Rosalee escapes from Cato’s clutches but Cato finds a letter telling where Harriet is located.

Patty spits off to go get her. Meanwhile, the stress of everything is making Rosalee go into labor. As a few from patty’s crew almost break in to the room, James stabs one in the hand. Rosalee delivers the baby as Noah is leading his team to free the slaves in Kentucky.

Cato brings Patty to Harriet’s location and Patty draws her weapon. She storms into the door looking for her but she is not there. This was a diversion for Cato to kill her, which he does. A flashback appears showing Cato fabricated everything and wrote the letter himself.

He tells Patty’s author, Donahue, he is taking over her gang and he will keep them going by bringing them Rosalee.

Cato’s true intentions are revealed.

Noah and Elizabeth return to the safe house where James and Noah’s newborn son are discovered tucked way in tight quarters. A flashback scene shows Rosalee placing them in the box, as Cato threatens to kill Georgia and all of the others.

James tells them that Cato captured Rosalee, Georgia and the others for a bounty. He has officially become the new Patty Cannon.

Noah is in tears at this point and he tells his son that “he is going to be free” repeatedly.

Ten months later…

Elizabeth wakes up a man in his cabin. They embrace each otter as he heads off to the Armory of the weapons captured from slave plantations.

Later on, Elizabeth is on a pier where the weapons are being taken for use in a future battle. Elizabeth’s new access to a plethora of weapons should be very useful next season.

  1. Very disappointing season finale. I can’t really explain it but it could’ve been much better.

  2. I didn’t like this season. Loved Harriet though. I still hope this show isn’t cancelled.
