‘Atlanta’ Recap: Van Searches for Drake + Episode Tackles Black Men Dating White Women

Van and her girls pregame for Drake’s NYE Party.

The episode opens with Van’s friend Candice on Instagram Live. She’s excited about a party they are going to. The party is a NYE Party at Drake’s mansion.

Candice also shouted out her lip gloss she’s wearing and gave out a discount code for followers to use.

While Candice is showing off her look on IG Live, Van is staring in to her phone. So when Candice puts the camera in her face, Van gave her a “stank” face.

Afterwards, Van tells Candice and her other friends that her iPhone won’t hold a charge after she dropped it into Lottie’s bath.

Tammy jumps in and says that they’re not talking about their kids or relationships tonight. Instead, she begins to sing about someone “licking it” and “sticking it.”

Their friend Nadine jokes with Tammy saying, “If you keep it up, you’re gonna be on baby number 2 tomorrow.”

“I got an IUD… “ – Tammy

The conversation turns to birth control, as Van mentions she switched up to an IUD after giving birth to Lottie. All the girls agree to that kind of contraceptive, except for Nadine.

“What about condoms?” – Nadine

“B****, how old are you? Are you still using condoms? Are you in high school?” – Van

Nadine clapped back saying, “Well, I don’t have kids and I don’t have HPV.”

All Van could do at this point is shrug.

Candice switches up the convo, by saying her man DJ will meet them at the door because “Drake doesn’t like groupies.”

Van and Nadine harp on Candice stringing DJ along as just a friend. Candice says, “We just talk business.”

Nadine jokes that Candice sent DJ nude selfies.

“First of all, my t*tties are already on Tumblr, and he only saw half of a nipple, so that don’t count.” – Candice

Nadine still rags on Candice and her status with DJ.

The girls are hype to be heading to Drake’s party. But Van keeps staring at Earn on Instagram Live with another woman playing in his hair.

Before the all leave, they all take shots, cheering to the night.

The party van to the party seems sketchy.

Afterwards, they head to an empty parking lot in the cold. They hop out and huddle staying warm. While they are looking for the shuttle, a random man with a pizza box looking for a way into the party.

But they brush him off and they find the van they are waiting on. They knock on the window. Candice tells him they are here for the party but he ignores them. He only opens up the van when Candice gives him the code.

When inside, they are seated with other women, and space is at a premium. Van sits next to a woman that’s crying tears of joy for going to the party. This makes Van uncomfortable.

While driving, the van driver makes a creepy statement about the women on board.

“Y’all pretty. Ima take y’all home with me.” – Party Van Driver

Van then notices someone she’s following is at the party and posted selfies with Drake in them to Instagram.

Candice hooks up with DJ and Van is stuck with Nadine, who can’t handle her high.

Eventually, they head to the mansion where the party is being held. They are met by the doorman who hands them booties to cover their shoes.

He kicks out a woman who tried to sneak in the party by forging his signature on the party. As the girls walk in, the woman is carried away kicking and screaming.

Once inside, they all notice the actor Devyonne Johnson. He receives a kiss from a white woman, and Tammy’s disgusted.

“He would be with a white woman. These Hollywood n****s are so cliché.” – Tammy

Next, DJ stops by and Candice runs to him, hugging him. Van asks about being introduced to Drake, and DJ says he is walking around the party.

Van shows him the photo of the VIP room but he brushes it off. He instead gives them a THC-laced gummy bear. Candice walks off with DJ and Tammy forces Nadine to chew and swallow the gummy.

Later on, they come across girls appearing to have a good time, including riding a mechanical bull. Nadine is feeling the gummy too hard, and Tammy is still salty about the white woman with Davyonne Johnson.

Van is glued to her iPhone, looking to find Drake for a photo. But when Tammy leaves Nadine with Van, Van loses track of Nadine at the bar. At the bar, Van talks to the bartender about Earn.

“He’s out here living his life, and I’m living mine.” – Van

She catches Nadine talking to 911 apparently. She tells Van, “I’m dying. I need to get out of this room.”

Van must ditch a guy named Brandon and find Drake.

Van bumps into a guy named Brandon. She gets taken to a part of the mansion that appears to be Drake’s studio. Brandon tells Van that Drake’s nutritionist is his cousin. Van asks how he knows about the room, and he tells her he’s been at the house since about 8.

Van gets creeped out by this and ditches him once she gets to a bathroom. She hangs out in there until he leaves. She texts her girls and Candice is feeding sushi to a Tiger with DJ, and Tammy is stalking the actor and his white girlfriend.

Van ends up in another part of the mansion, and calls out for Drake. No one responds and she enters a bathroom. Next, she explores a closet which is huge. Finally, comes across a set of doors, and opens it, exposing a green bomber jacket.

But Nadine is by the pool talking to Darius about the universe. He tells Nadine that she is a simulation. Nadine asks, “Can you help me stop thinking?”

“Perhaps.” – Darius

She then asks Darius if the woman behind them in the pool is real.

“Real Fake.” – Darius

Their other friend Tammy is still side-eying the interracial couple.

Back in the closet, Van is still trying on clothes and spraying her self with cologne. Van is still wearing a few pieces of clothes from Drake’s closet. She’s grooving and trying to take a selfie when she gets a text from Candice that she and DJ left for T-Pain’s NYE party.

Tammy gets alone with Davyonne’s white girlfriend

Eventually, Tammy catches up with the woman dating Davyonne. She stares at her.

“Yeah. I’m staring at you, ho.” – Tammy

She tells the woman that she’s sick of the narrative of white women with black men.

The woman tells Tammy that she had his back since he was in community theatre.

“Maybe I just add value to his life.” – White woman

Tammy then explains that most black women can’t afford to invest years into a man hoping his career will take off. She says white women have other financial investments they can rely on if things don’t work out.

“I ain’t got time to be sitting out here with no community theatre a** n**** for 8 years, and wishing on a G**D*** star. “There are plenty, plenty, plenty of black women, but you don’t see Brad Pitt trying to date Shonda Rhimes! Type ‘beautiful women’ in Google Images and then talk to me.”  – Tammy

The woman tells Tammy, “But I love him.”

“B****, I love him too!” – Tammy

Eventually, Davyonne heads back to his woman with a drink and his girl gets up. Tammy gives Davyonne a dirty look when he sits down, and he appears real confused about what just happened.

Van learns the Drake selfies are fake.

Eventually, Van ends up in another room with a man speaking Spanish, frustrated with his television. She asks for directions to get out. She eventually understands him enough to see the calendar on the wall. The calendar shows Drake in Europe during the time of the party.

Van storms out and runs into the crowd of women waiting to take their selfie with Drake. When Van walks into the room, she sees women taking selfies with cardboard cutouts and two women charging $20 to do so.

The women are selling a selfie and Puma slides for just $30.

She walks out to the pool in anger and comes across Nadine with Darius. Darius is at the party because he knows Drake’s chef. She asks him if Earn is with him and he says no.

They end up all walking down the road with Tammy. While walking, Van comes to the conclusion that Drake is Mexican.

  1. Donald Glover did a lot of projecting on this episode. We get it. He’s not into black women and he feels we weren’t interested in him before he blew up. But don’t shade us. We are the ones watching your show and making it successful. Not just black men.

  2. Hated this episode. The only good thing about it was Darius. They really want to make it seem like black women are pressed about them being with white women. I’m so over it.

  3. I have some issues with Van as a character. She’s not a good friend. How do you leave your high friend at a party alone like that? Sure she ended up with Darius but that could have ended badly. And I also think it’s awful that she won’t move on from Earn when he’ literally a bum. Does she not understand she can do better?

  4. Show is jumping the shark this season. Way too out there and this episode was written to shade black women.
