Look The Part: How You Should Present Yourself On An Interview

Tips on the proper attire to wear for professional interviews

By: Taren Vaughan

The clothes that we wear can tell a lot about our personal styles. Clothing styles are unique for everyone and serve as visual expressions of individuals’ personalities. Although we are free to wear any type of clothing that we want to, the attire for professional interviews is very standard. Along with attire, we should consider suitable hairstyles and make-up as well.

Clothing: Skirt suits are more favored when it comes to interview attire. Pant suits can be worn but skirt suits are highly recommended. All skirts should be knee length. Remember, you are trying to get a job, not make a fashion statement. Dark colored suits are the best choices as far as color is concerned for suits. Finding blouses that look good with dark colored suits is much easier to do than with lighter colored suits.

Accessories: When it comes to wearing accessories for interviews, less is more. Avoid wearing multiple rings on your fingers and stay away from large bracelets and bangles. They can be distracting and cause lots of unnecessary noise. The earrings that you wear on an interview should be very subtle. Put away those oversized hoops and chandelier earrings when it’s interview time. A pair of pearls, small hoops or gold or silver studs will do just fine.

Make-up: Your make-up of choice for an interview should not be too dramatic. Use natural colors that blend well with your skin tone. Colorful blushes and bright eye shadows should be avoided.

Hairstyles: Last but not least, make sure your hair is in order. Wild, extravagant hairstyles are definitely not the way to go for interviews. Keep your hairstyles simple with a fresh wrap or neat bun. Braids and dreadlocks are acceptable hairstyles to wear to for interviews. Just be sure to keep them neat and presentable. Having too much going on with your hair can take the attention away from what you are saying to the interviewer.

These are very important things to keep in mind before going into an interview. You want to prove to the interviewer that you are qualified for the position. But believe it or not, your chance to do so all begins with your appearance.
