Jada Pinkett-Smith Rants About People’s Criticisms Over the Way She Raises Willow

By: Taren Vaughan

Jada Pinkett-Smith defends Willow Smith‘s hairstyle choices in open letter? The Smith family has been coined as one of the most talented families in Hollywood right now as Jada Pinkett-Smith, husband Will Smith and their children Willow and Jaden Smith have all found their niche in the entertainment arena. Willow Smith, channeling her focus into a singing career, is one member of the Smith clan who manages to strike up much controversy when it comes to her style of dress and the way she wears her hair, Willow not being too bothered by the comments of others. And caused quite a stir after she posted a picture of herself posing with a fake tongue piercing. Way before the tongue ring outrage occurred, the parenting skills of Jada and Will have been heavily questioned by people, some of them thinking that they have started to lose their control of their daughter. As people continue to criticize Jada and Will for giving Willow too much freedom when it comes to her looks, Jada Pinkett-Smith decided to take it upon herself to directly address her logic behind why she let Willow cut her hair in an open letter that she posted to her fans on Facebook.

Here’s the letter that Jada posted on her Facebook fan page:

A letter to a friend…

This subject is old but I have never answered it in its entirety. And even with this post it will remain incomplete. The question why I would LET Willow cut her hair. First the LET must be challenged. This is a world where women, girls are constantly reminded that they don’t belong to themselves; that their bodies are not their own, nor their power or self determination. I made a promise to endow my little girl with the power to always know that her body, spirit and her mind are HER domain. Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair. It’s also a statement that claims that even little girls have the RIGHT to own themselves and should not be a slave to even their mother’s deepest insecurities, hopes and desires. Even little girls should not be a slave to the preconceived ideas of what a culture believes  a little girl should be. More to come. Another day.

What do you think of Jada’s comments?

  1. But it’s not that deep. It’s more to it that a damn hair cut. This child has no boundaries and no real parents. They think it’s cute now, but when they see where she ends up later, they’ll understand why people were so against this.

  2. I really wish she would shut the hell up. All of this is nothing but the teachings of that cult Scientology. In Scientology, they don’t believe in childhood. They teach kids to act like adults. That’s why Tom Cruise’s daughter wears heels! My momma didn’t let me do what I wanted and I ended up being a pretty decent person because she taught me BOUNDARIES! Jada and Will are so delusional it’s sad.

  3. It’s cook Jada. Just don’t act like you don’t know what’s wrong with her in about 8 years, after she pulls a Lindsey Lohan.

  4. Parents should be parents and not FRIENDS to their children. Willow has made it clear on more than several occasions that she is not a happy child. I’m not sure when Jada will get it.

  5. She is really trying so hard not to raise her kids in the traditional way. And that’s her right but I can’t help but think she’s making a big mistake. Kids need boundaries. They need someone to tell them no. And this is more than just hair, it’s also about education. They don’t even make Willow go to school. It’s sad.

  6. She can raise that little girl however she wants to. Just don’t be snotting and crying in front of the cameras when she wilds out.

  7. She really gets on my nerves with this. She acts like the old school way of raising kids is so terrible, but people from the older generations are much better people than these young folks are today. They are more considerate, respectful, and make better decisions. They also have more morals. I’d raise my kids the old way versus this new BS any day.

  8. I never cared about the hair thing or what Willow wears. My problem is that Jada and Will do NOT make this girl go to school and get an education. She’s said numerous interviews that she doesn’t have time to go to school and that to me is more disappointing than her experimenting with her hair. I don’t see Willow having a bright future. I see her parents having to support her for the rest of her life and I don’t think she’ll ever be as independent as Jada thinks letting her cut her hair off is. That’s not independence. Equipping your kids to seek knowledge and do something for themselves is the real power and independence. Jada and Will are two posers who do nothing but follow behind Scientology.

  9. “The worst thing about maths is all the kids are ahead of me because they go to school” – Willow Smith

    Maths? Enough said.

  10. I don’t care one way or another. Willow will end up just like all the other Hollywood brats anyway. These kids don’t stand a chance.

  11. Jada keeps bringing this up. Why? Because she’s insecure and cares too much about what other people think of her and her kids. Raise them how you want and stop trying to convince everyone.

  12. Call me crazy but I actually agree with her. Hair is not that serious. When I was a kid, I died my hair pink and cut it a few times and let’s not even talk about how awful I dressed. But I still grew up and went to college and made something of myself. My parents weren’t really into telling me what I could do with my hair and clothes. It’s just not that big of a deal. I think they (Jaden too) are good kids. They will be fine. Yes, Willow needs to get more serious about school, but they don’t really deserve all the backlash they get.

  13. Her letter sounds all intelligent and makes some good points BUT the truth will reveal itself when Willow gets older. For now, all people can do is have their opinions. We’ll see how Willow ends up in a few years.

  14. Agree on the hair, but the problem goes much deeper. She barely goes to school; which is critical for not only an education, but social development and interaction with her peers. Hope things turn out ok, but have a feeling the girls really struggling and looking for guidance.

  15. Sometimes Jada is deeper than I can follow. lol Please if Willow’s body is her own then I would love to see her react when she starts trying other things with her body…like tattoos, piercings, drinking and drugs.

  16. I don’t see why Jada or anyone else made it this serious! It’s just hair. Personally, I think Jada shows that she’s weak and cares about what others think about her parenting style. As a parent, I don’t feel the need to explain my parenting style to anyone. I do as I please and I do as I see fit. Hopefully one day Jada will get to the point where she feels the same way. She’s always explaining herself on Facebook and in interviews. It’s very telling.
