Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have been married for almost 16 years. And for many years, the couple was pegged as the symbol for “black love,” and it was just understood that their romance was one that a lot of people in the African-American community wanted to model their own love lives and marriages after. Viewed as a symbol of hope amid a Hollywood full of celebrities who divorce just as quickly as they marry, Will and Jada have been holding steady and they managed to make it look good. However, rumors suggesting the couple have an open marriage have tainted their status as the couple of hope and the symbol of “real black love.” Will didn’t help the rumors any when he said in one of his interviews that he talks to his wife when he gets attracted to other women. The actor followed up with the comment that no where in his vows did it say “forsake all others.” Many took the statements as a confirmation that the couple has an open marriage.

Over the years, Will has been rumored to have had flings with some of his past co-stars in his blockbuster films, and there’s always reports that the couple’s marriage is on the rocks. But in a recent interview with HuffPost Live, Jada comes full circle with the rumors and reveals that feels she can’t control what Will does with other women, but denies they have an open marriage. Jada says:

“No. I think that people will get the idea because Will and I are very relaxed with one another. And I think because of the way I answered questions, ‘Girl you know, what would you do?…How do you deal with other women?’ And my answer is, I’ve always told Will, ‘You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay.’ Because at the end of the day, Will is his own man. I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that’s not for me to do for him. Or vice versa.”

Jada also says that marriage isn’t easy and married couples need to treat their marriage like a life partnership because it is:

“I don’t think it’s easy to be married to anyone. I think that you have to go into a relationship knowing — especially when you’re dedicating yourself to someone for the rest of your life — this is a life partnership … He’s my best friend. He’s been by my side through some of the most difficult parts of my life. And so that’s something you can never take away.”

  1. I have so much respect for Jada. She’s very smart. She’s not saying they have an open relationship. She’s saying that she’s giving Will the right to decide whether or not he wants to be a faithful husband or not. And that’s really all any wife can do.

  2. So basically, she’s not trying to keep Will on a tight leash because she gets that he’s a grown man who will do what he wants…that’s real.

  3. I get what she’s saying. She’s not condoning him being with other women but believes he needs to make his own moral decisions.

  4. Meh, sounds like she is talking about trust. I don’t think they have an open relationship. They say both are always together when the other one works. They don’t do projects at the same time because they don’t like to be apart. So I doubt they mess around with other people or willingly agree to let the other do it.
