Janelle Monae made it clear from the moment that she stepped onto the music scene that she was not about conforming to the norms that the industry had in place for female entertainers. Though Janelle Monae is praised for her sound effort to bring something different to the table when it comes to artistry with her unique sound, the singer’s outward appearance is well noted too as she has become a Cover Girl and landed herself on the cover of Elle Magazine, a very happy moment for Janelle. Featured in the May issue of Essence Magazine, Janelle Monae talked about the image that she portrays and has said before that she makes it a point not to give people too much sex appeal in order to hold on to her role model image and further explains the reason behind why she doesn’t show off too much of her skin, saying that that is not necessary to be sexy:

“People don’t ask Jay-Z to take his shirt off when he rhymes…Redefine what it means to be sexy and what it means to be a woman. Showing my skin is not what makes me sexy. I like skirts and dresses just like everyone else, but I had a message I needed to put out there. It was up to me to show people and young girls there was another way.”

There are many singers who have no problem baring all. Janelle Monae however feels that isn’t necessary to be sexy.

  1. Is she still with Diddy? If so, that explains why she hasn’t blown up yet. I really wish she would get some more attention in the media.

  2. Finally someone who is talking with sense!!! I really hope she set the platform for what she is saying. 100% love her

  3. Love her personality and common sense. I hope that she can continue to shine through the garbage out right now
