As we reported recently, female rapper and American Idol host Nicki Minaj made headlines when it was confirmed that she fired her long time wig designer and fashion stylist. Rumors suggested Nicki did the firings because she wants to step back from her over the top “Barbie” image, a look many have associated with clownish theatrics. Nicki talked a little about trying something new with her image in a recent interview with Elle Magazine, and she admitted the thought terrified her. But she has already managed to pull off the new look quite well, and her recent photo shoot and new look on American Idol have been met with lots of support.
In a recent interview with MTV First, Nicki talks more about giving up her animated image. According to Nicki, she feels it’s important to show women that despite her old look which consisted of bright-colored wigs and outrageous outfits, she’s a regular woman just like everyone else. She says:
“Towards the end of last year I just wanted to have a more natural look, and that’s what I was explaining to my team. I knew that I was about to start doing covers of magazines, and I wanted a more relatable look. I knew that I was about to launch a clothing line and I want women to know that I’m just a regular woman and I’m not some weirded-out character all the time.
“It felt like I took off this mask—it didn’t feel like that to me—but to the world it’s almost like, ‘Oh, now we see the real her.’ It was weird. I think people were under the assumption that I was wearing a lot of makeup because I was wearing pink blush and pink lips. In the ELLE shoot we definitely did hardly any makeup, but when people see me on Idol now for instance, I’m not wearing less makeup, I’m just wearing nude colors.”
On the business front, Nicki confirmed that she has two more fragrances coming out and her clothing line with Kmart will be debuting in the fall.

I’m glad to hear it! Nicki’s always been a beautiful girl anyway, so she never needed all that crap! She looks so much better without it..guess she just wanted an over the top gimmick. It was way too clownish anyway!
