The J. Cole album release date criticism has finally been addressed by the rapper. J. Cole is having major moment in his music career, not only is his new album “Born Sinner” expected to do big in its first week of sales, but the Roc Nation emcee is also starting to get the attention he has pretty been deserving of since he started making buzz as an underground artist. However, some would have told him he was out of his league to even think about releasing a studio album on the same day Kanye decided to drop “Yeezus,” but he did just that and says he did it because he feels his album is great enough to throw his hat in the ring with much bigger artists. When talking about the album’s original release date, J. Cole tells MTV News:

“I could’ve left it right where I was and just gone head-to-head with Wale and seen what happened there. I would’ve had a much better chance, but it wasn’t about the sales. That would be a nice bonus, but it’s more about the statement, [and putting] my name in the conversation. I’ma throw my name in the hat.

“This is art, and I can’t compete against the Kanye West celebrity and the status that he’s earned just from being a genius. But I can put my name in the hat and tell you that I think my album is great and you be the judge and you decide.”

Apparently J. Cole’s decision to share an album release date with Kanye will pay off huge for the rapper because reports suggest “Born Sinner” might actually sell 300k in its first week. These are numbers J. Cole has never pulled off before, considering his first album Cole World: The Sideline Story accumulated first week sales of 218,000.

  1. Very dope album. He makes Kanye look like such a fool. Who would have thought J. Cole’s album would actually be better than Kanye’s? Crazy. These young rappers are making these “legends” look dusty. Oh and I’m still listening to Kendrick Lamar too…

  2. It was a smart move. Maybe he knew Ye’s album was going to suck so he wanted to give people options…LOL

  3. J. Cole is smart. He knew his album would get a lot of buzz if he released it on the same day. Now he’s going to sell like 300,000 copies. Genius.

  4. I wonder how Kanye feels to know a lot of his old fans have decided to just buy J. Cole’s album instead of Yeezus? That’s all I see on my Facebook newsfeed. They can’t deal Kanye anymore. LOL.

  5. So many people learned about J. Cole just because he chose the same day as Kanye. All I see on IG from white boys too is them holding up J. Cole’s album. It was a very smart marketing move.
