The Butler box office numbers are impressive for the film’s opening weekend. Lee Daniels’ highly anticipated historical film “The Butler” has been the topic of conversation for several weeks as movie goers were anxious to see how the film would be. Starring Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. and a number of other very talented stars, the movie highlights the life of butler Cecil Gaines who served as a butler for eight presidents during his years of service at the White House. And during his time as a butler, Cecil was able to witness notable discussions take place concerning the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination and other historical events in our nation’s history. And because of his dedicated service, Cecil’s experiences had a huge impact on African Americans as a whole.

The powerful film “Fruitvale Station” about the tragic shooting of California native Oscar Grant brought in big numbers at the the box office in its opening weekend. And as “The Butler” faced some criticism over casting choices, the movie is doing extremely well so far. In its opening weekend in theaters, “The Butler” debuted in the number one spot at the box office and earned a total of $24.3 million so far for the weekend according to Gossip Cop.

Our staff members haven’t gotten a chance to check out the film yet but for those who have seen “The Butler,” tell us what you thought of it in the comment section.

  1. I knew this would be number one. A lot of people I know are seeing it. I can’t bring myself to do it because I can’t stand the director.

    1. It’s the same man who directed Precious right? I don’t think I can see another one of his films. I’m on the fence about seeing it just because it’s him movie.

      1. I could never bring myself to watch Precious I just couldn’t. I probably won’t go see this movie because of what he said in his interview w/ Huffington post it just turned me completely off of him.

          1. Basically he was just saying white people loved black people in the South. That white people have deep affection for black people. He was making excuses for Paula Deen. Oh and also he feels safer in the south because at least he knows what those who hate him really think about him. And he knows “his place” in their eyes as a black man. I have a problem with his whole perception especially since he wasn’t even raised in the south.
