Erykah Badu Sets the Record Straight

In an open letter posted to her Facebook page, Erykah addresses feminists who feel her tweets were nothing more than slut shaming.

She writes:

BADUIZM
SACREDNESS
vs
SLUT SHAMING.
Peace
Keep in mind I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my $#!+!.
I am also very sensitive to how the Sacred Mother has been viewed and treated in our societies through out history.
Once, John Lennon, in his non conforming voice protectively, said ,
“WOMEN ARE THE N*GGERS OF THE WORLD. ”
Couldn’t be truer.
We Have alwAys taken a back seat and quite often a back hand.
I’ve been accused of participating in
“slut shaming. ”
Im now understanding that this is a popular term in our nation today.
In an over s*xed Patriarchal
Ruled World, we as women have had our share of discrimination. SO MUCH that We get clouded with furry as we fight for equality and empowerment.
But America, you got me f*cked up.
Talk about missing the point.
” it’s not shaming to tell a young woman that at times it’s necessary to wear clothing that fits her environment. That’s love.”
I know it’s confusing and we girls are angry and often blamed for … Hell … Everything .
But,
My point is:
Can we not be MODEST without feeling SUPPRESSED ?
How Can we teach our daughters FREEDOM without teaching them SACREDNESS?
THERE IS A BALANCE.
Of course this is ALL relative but I’m old fashioned.
Anciently in fact .
And I am aware that we can not change our condition with a tweet about dress code.
But we do what we can.
My thoughts (tweets)
about the male species or the men in our society were purely biological and not meant to justify nor accuse .
But this is where we disconnect.
I did not create an “enemy” or “Villain” in my statement, so others quickly injected one.
Seems the only real enemy in this type of dialogue is not fully understanding the nature of “PERIODS AND MORNING WOOD. ”
This Has nothing to do with s*xism. Just … Well..s*x.
I instead, posed a non biased POV- since we WERE INDEED DISCUSSING MEN IN CLASSROOMS WHO WERE NOT ACCUSED OF Being RAPIST NOR DEVIANTS & could very well be decent human beings like your fathers and husbands.
Yet.. still human beings biologically capable of being attracted to young women …
That’s nature.
Wether we think they should or shouldn’t be…
Thats Morality (law) .
Let’s keep in mind,
That there would be NO need for moral law if we were naturally moral.
In retrospect
I was only thinking of EVERYONE in the learning environment and the SACREDNESS of our young women and men, especially.
Because , see, I personally would LIKE to see teens in the learning environment dress age appropriate.
Grown women can wear what they want.
Check this out:
“Erykah Badu Says Teaching Young Women To Dress Cautiously Is Equally Important As Teaching Young men to be responsible.
Erykah Badu voiced her opinion on a sensitive topic that many women feel isn’t even up for debate, but in the midst of having spur-of-the-moment reactions, it seems a large majority have missed a very important message she was trying to make plain. The context of Erykah’s tweets are linked to a recent incident at a New Zealand high school where a school principal called a group of female students into his office and told them to lower the hem line on their skirts to knee-level. ”
My point of view was based on nature and not moral law.
Again , There would be no need for moral law if we naturally behaved morally.
Some how the friendly debate turned into
Rape, slut shaming, victim blaming etc.
Tho these are valid gripes from women in this overly-s*xed society, I don’t feel they applied to my argument.
However I welcome all views..
Until they become fruitless .

  1. Cute but she missed the whole point feminists were making. The point is it’s really damaging to keep telling women that we are responsible for everything and what grown men choose to do to us. It’s just time that we start holding them responsible for once and stop pretending they are animals unable to make logical and moral decisions. I wouldn’t expect Erykah to understand that though because like she said, she’s old school and a lot of old school people believe a woman is responsible for just about everything.

  2. I could say something really messed up right now but I’m going to behave because it’s Saturday. I like Erykah but she’s not as wise as she thinks she is. She should tweet less and just stick to making good music.

  3. Or we could just stop making excuses for grown men who chase after young girls to take advantage of them. But this is the same woman who called R Kelly her brother so I expect nothing less when it comes to this topic.

    1. It’s funny that you mention that because I remember how older black people were blaming R Kelly’s victims and saying they deserved it because they were fast.

  4. This open letter isn’t any better than the tweets. She basically just said the same thing and she sounds really ignorant. Male teachers shouldn’t be s-xually attracted to their young students regardless of what they wear to school. They are there to do a job.

  5. Now I love me some Erykah but is she really talking about young girls need to be more modest when she has multiple children with multiple men? Come on now. It amazes me how some women love to preach about women dressing more conservatively but they ain’t conservative in any other area of their own lives.

  6. Her message confuses me because I thought she was a free spirit who believed there is power in a woman’s body. Wasn’t that what she was saying when she defended getting butt naked in her music video? Anyway young black girls are always put inside a box. Sadly it’s other women who put them there more than men do. If someone is distracted by what a child is wearing, they need to find another career.

  7. What really bothers me about this is she is low-key saying it’s natural for a man to be attracted to a young girl. And she is saying all of this after defending R Kelly at the awards show. This just isn’t sitting well with me.
