Being Mary Jane Recap: Is Lee the One?

Mary Jane heads back to Atlanta.

Mary Jane is hit in the face with a snowball during a live broadcast, but her anger subsides after Kara informs her that they are going to Atlanta to cover a Thurgood Marshall gala. As soon as she makes it back to her hometown, she pays her family a visit.

Although she’s happy to be back home, she is worried the familiarity could lead her back to old habits that aren’t good for her.

“Being back at home in my own room…I’m afraid of falling back into old habits.” – Mary Jane to Lee via a phone conversation

Lee decides to take a trip to Atlanta to surprise Mary Jane and meet her family.

Mary Jane is happy to see Lee when he drops by the house, and her mother Helen thinks the gesture means he’s very serious about their relationship.

“You flew all this way to surprise my daughter? Sounds serious.” – Helen

Lee then joins the family for dinner and is getting along with them very easily. Niecy is the only one who seems a little reserved and questions if he’s good enough for her very successful auntie.

Helen learns an old friend passed away.

Helen is absolutely devastated to learn one of her old friends passed away and it is revealed that they used to sing together back in the day. She asked that her husband, Paul Sr., refrains from telling the kids. She doesn’t want to put a damper on Mary Jane and Lee’s visit.

Lee and Mary Jane get a warning from Helen.

Staying in the house and in different rooms turns on Mary Jane and Lee. When they decide to try to sneak around and get busy under Mary Jane’s parents’ roof, Helen walks in on a naked Lee as he waits for Mary Jane’s arrival to his room.

She gives both of them a lecture and warns them against getting freaky in the house.

Helen thinks Mary Jane and Lee could get engaged soon.

Mary Jane talks to her mother more about Lee and reveals that he has children and a baby mama in the UK.

“This isn’t a bad thing but you’re about to turn 40. Your egg carton is empty and even if you had any left, they probably cracked.” – Helen to Mary Jane

Helen points out that Lee came all the way to Atlanta to meet the family, so Mary Jane shouldn’t rule out a proposal in the near future.

Treyvion is having problems in school.

Nightmares are keeping Treyvion up at night, and he’s been suspended for biting another student. Mary Jane thinks the punishment is too harsh and Niecy confirms that the white students receive less harsh consequences. Mary Jane urges Niecy to challenge the school to ensure Treyvion is treated fairly.

Niecy wants to tweet about the situation and Lee offers to pen the tweet for her. She accepts.

Lee stands up for Mary Jane.

Mary Jane decides to take Lee to the Thurgood Marshall gala, and she runs into some colleagues. One in particular, Vladimir Frederick, is a douche bag and her biggest competitor.

He and Mary Jane decide to compete to see who will get an interview with Judge McCallister, who happens to be a Supreme Court nominee, and he’s been turning down interviews left and right all night.

However, Lee uses his wits to distract Vladimir long enough for Mary Jane to approach the judge’s table. However, he declines an interview.

After Vladimir figures out Lee was nothing more than a decoy for Mary Jane, the two sit down and have a drink at the bar. Now a bit drunk, Vladimir starts talking about Mary Jane and claims she’s a selfish opportunist who only dates ballers. Lee tells him that she’s changed but Vladimir isn’t so convinced. This bothers Lee but he lets it go and rejoins Mary Jane.

Mary Jane was able to get to the judge’s wife at the event and their small talk impressed her so much she promises to talk her husband into doing an interview with Mary Jane.

Vladimir, still drunk, approaches Mary Jane and Lee and says that she only got an opportunity with the judge because she has great boobs. This outrages Lee and he punches Vladimir in the face.

He leaves the gala with Mary Jane and she thanks him for having her back although she questions why he went off so quickly. Lee then repeats what Vladimir said about her, and she assures him that she’s changed. They sleep together outside but not before Mary Jane asked Lee to tell her he loves her. He does and she tells him she loves him too.

Mary Jane tells her mother that Lee told her he loves her and he’s happy to have met her family. Helen thinks he could be the one.

Helen tells Mary Jane not to make the same mistakes she did.

Mary Jane finds an old record of her mother singing, and it causes Helen to reflect on the past. She tells her daughter that she used to be a singer but decided to end her career when she met Paul, Sr.

“I gave up doing what I love because I fell in love with your daddy.” – Helen

She then expresses that she regrets quitting her singing career and that Mary Jane should not make the same mistakes because a woman can actually have it all.

Lee gets Niecy’s approval.

Niecy and Mary Jane attend Lee’s comedy show in Atlanta, and Niecy discovers that Beyonce liked her tweet Lee penned. She tells her aunt that she thinks Lee is dope and Mary Jane beams in agreement.

Lee invites Helen on stage to sing.

  1. This episode really made me like Lee. Now I’m paranoid he’s going to do something really messed up to ruin everything.

    1. I know right? Like this is the first time ever she’s been allowed to be happy and in a healthy relationship. This probably won’t last.

    2. I think it’s because stability has never been a thing for MJ outside of her career and family. But it’s nice to see her happy and in a healthy relationship. I just want her to chill on telling him to say he loves her. That bothers me.

  2. Good episode. I really like Lee alot and I think his surprise visit went well. Feel like something or someone is going to come around and mess it up but I hope not. I also enjoyed the dialog about Southern food. So many of us are, whats the word they used….sadiddy lol when it comes to soul food. Yes we know its fattening, and this that and the next. It was also made out of the resilience of our people and I love that they touched on that. Respect it. Also loved that they brought light to the differences with punishments between children based on their race. They mess with our communities literally starting with the babies and it’s so sickening.

  3. Sh-t Lee had to grow on me. But now I like him a lot. I just have a feeling I won’t like his a-s at the end of the season.

  4. Lee is ok in my book. He’s just not a looker like the others from past seasons but that’s ok if he’s treating her better.

    1. I noticed that too and I wonder if they purposely did that. Sometimes women always go after their type but wind up falling for what they normally wouldn’t. Maybe there’s a hidden message lol.

  5. I loved this episode as well as the one before. It just proves that her moving to New York wasn’t the best move for the show.

  6. IDK why everyone keeps saying Lee is ugly. I personally think he’s an attractive guy who just so happens to be a good one. I’ve run into some guys who weren’t lookers and were still a$$holes just like I’ve run into the ones who were fine as hell and jerks. To each their own I guess!

  7. Lee IS a looker and his personality is amazingly refreshing and attractive. Will he last? A few things, MJ has not met the children or their mom… and I am hoping to be 200% wrong, but I think her old flame, David, will come back on the scene… He loved here deeply I believe, but MJ was all over the place. David wanted stability, a wife, a family. Overall, I love the show, I love how Neeci’s love for the children and their well-being is her number one priority. I look forward to the show every day!!
