Chance the Rapper Explains Why More Artists Should Be Independent

Chance the Rapper had a detailed interview with Complex on a range of topics. During the interview with Complex, Chance spoke about being a father, collaborations with Kanye West, being an independent artists and plans for his next album.

Here are some highlights from the interview:

On Being the World’s Best Dad and the relationship with his own parents:

“…I’m in a position where I want to be closer to my parents now, because I realize how important that is. There was never a point, ever, in my life where I can remember loving someone as much or more than I love my mom until I met my daughter. So, it made me understand that my mom loves me more than she loves anybody in the world, and that’s crazy to me, so of course I wanna be around her. “

On the infamous “bleached a**hole” line from Kanye’s “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1”:

“‘Ye is a comedian in a lot of ways. He writes stuff that, you know, is painfully funny and painfully true.”

On being unsigned and independent:

“I need more artists to do it themselves. I try and stress this as often as possible…you’re the upper management. You’re the creative, you are the last decision maker, and you don’t ever have to feel compromised.”

On possibly selling his next album:

“I kinda hate the fact that I can’t chart, really… The way they have the streaming shit set up is weak as f***….It’s like 1,500 or 1,700 streams is the equivalent to one unit, and that’s just unfair. Nobody listens to their songs 1,700 times when they buy it — f*** outta here!”

  1. Nowadays, being independent isn’t such a drawback. Social media makes it possible to develop a following without a big label machine.

  2. He’s right. But not every artist has the connections he has. His dad is a big time politician and helped him get music contract which translated into him getting a deal with Apple Music.
