Mathew Knowles Talks Destiny’s Child, Elevatorgate and Colorism With Wendy Williams

Wendy Williams had Beyoncé’s father Mathew Knowles on her show for an highly anticipated interview. During the interview, they touched on a multitude of topics.

But first, Mathew, praised his two daughters, relishing his role as their manager and father.

You know, for years, I played a dual role as manager and as father. Today, I play the role… Well I don’t play the role. I actually live the role, 100 percent as their father.

And, I am extremely proud of them. Not just [proud] of what they’ve done professionally, but how they lived their life off the stage.

When asked if he wanted Beyoncé to be the breakout star of Destiny’s Child, he said, “No, not really.”

“Lies you tell,” Wendy immediately responds. However, Mathew kept his cool through the question, and brings up how Michelle and Kelly sold well on their own.

You have to remember, I actually came up with the strategy that the last 3 albums… and the ladies brought into it obviously… the last three Destiny’s Child albums, each of the ladies had solo projects.

Michelle has had 3 number one albums.

And you can do no better than number one, right? Beyoncé and Kelly are still extremely close, and Kelly’s sold millions outside America…

Wendy then asked if Destiny’s Child would ever get back together. He’s hopeful that it would happen. However, he doesn’t want it to happen at Coachella or during Beyoncé’s and Jay-Z’s upcoming tour. He actually wants the ladies to go on tour together.

Mathew also says that he is still Destiny Child’s manager and owns the group’s trademarks and music.

Next, Mathew apologized for revealing the genders of the twins.

I was on my way to the airport. I think it was one of those Saturday morning news shows. And I thought the scroll said Beyoncé has announced [the birth]. So I was rushing, and when I got to the airport, I just wanted to congratulate her. I thought she had told the world, because I knew and other people knew.

It was a mistake that I made, and I can own that. That was a mistake and I apologize.

Sometimes that happens.

When Mathew was asked about Elevatorgate, Mathew said he just laughed. To Mathew, that was just a classic Solange moment.

I have to tell you, I laughed so hard. Wendy, I laughed so hard, because if you know Solange… That’s Solange. You just never know what you’re going to get.

Firecracker… Don’t know where she gets that from. And Beyoncé would be in the corner like, “When you finish, let me know.”

So I just laughed.

Later in the interview, Mathew spoke about how his mother told him not to bring home any dark-skinned women.

That was wrong. But she did a lot of great things. That was wrong, and I internalized that as a kid. You know, what we hear as children, we sometimes internalize that. And it affects us in our adult life.

Wendy then asked, “And then, you chose Tina?”

Mathew said he chose Tina. When Wendy asked if his current wife is light-skinned, he said she’s “Beautiful.”

Lastly, Mathew denied ever saying Beyoncé would not be successful if she was dark-skinned.

Look in the book, I don’t even say Beyoncé’s name. What I said is in Pop Radio… If you look over in the last history of years… That you would see that those black females in pop radio [are] of a lighter complexion.

That’s a fact. You can’t go past that.

All around the world that happens.

  1. I was shocked at how smooth this interview went. I know Wendy wanted to be messy but she held back. Good for her. Sometimes you have to know when to scale back.

  2. Sometimes I feel like Mathew doesn’t really have a relationship with Solange or Beyonce. But he will never admit that because he’s too ashamed.

    1. i get the same vibe. its like he’s always on the outside speculating and i think thats how he ends up with his foot in his so often lol

  3. I think this was a good interview. But I’m still baffled as to why he would interview with someone who drags his daughter every chance she gets even though I think Wendy shades Beyonce for ratings and publicity. The way she buttered up Mathew with all those Bey compliments lets me know her hating a-s is really just a fan.
