‘Insecure’ Recap: A New Friend Inspires Issa to Make a Major Life Change + Molly Still Struggles

Issa D got her bathroom mirror back.

The episode opens with Issa in her bathroom rapping in her new bathroom mirror. She’s moving into her new apartment, within the complex she’s managing part-time. As she raps, Daniel knocks on her door, interrupting her freestyle.

He decided to be a good friend and help her move out of his place, into her new one. He had the last of her belongings placed in his car.  Issa tells Daniel she appreciates him and they exchange one last hug.

As Daniel walks out of the complex, Molly runs into him, asking him if he’s out.

“I’m gone.” – Daniel

Daniel walks out, and Molly side-eyes him as she walks in, slamming the apartment gate behind her.

Molly seems to be impressed by her new place as Issa opens a box of broken glasses, which were stored at Molly’s place.

However, Molly gifted Issa a new air mattress and some expensive Hennessy.

Molly wants Issa to un-clutter, getting rid of old things.

While unpacking, Molly unloads into Issa, telling her about her issues at the black law firm. Issa tells Molly not to be negative, and be her “fire-a** self.”

As they unpack, Molly tells her to create a box for things to throw out. This includes Forever 21 earrings, a Zane book, and mix cd’s made by Lawrence.

Issa scoffs at throwing away the cd’s, but Molly tries to trash them anyway. Their good time gets interrupted by Trina, a resident in the complex. Trina tells Issa she needs to do something about the squirrels in the walls.

“They having babies! Girl, do something!” – Trina

At home, Molly cuddles with her dog in the bed, staring at the empty side of the bed.

Meanwhile, Issa appears to take her advice, trashing old things. However, Issa gets a change of heart over the items. When untrusting old items, Issa comes across her high school rap lyrics book.

“You were so simple back then.” – Issa

Molly bonds with Felicia and Stacy at work.

The next morning, Molly’s at work still struggling to fit in. While trying to talk about her suggestions for a case, Taurean interrupts her. He talks over her in the meeting, expressing his suggestions. This irks Molly, who wears her disdain for him on her face.

After the meeting, Molly runs into Felicia and Stacy at the coffee pot trying to talk about Taurean positively. However, they read right through her, telling her not to worry about Taurean’s antics.

“They didn’t teach modesty at Morehouse.” – Felicia

Meanwhile, Freida was able to get Issa back into the field. She delivered the good news to Issa at work. Freida got Joanne to reconsider due to all of the positive work Issa did in the past at schools.

Freida wants to talk to Issa about this after lunch, and Issa agrees.

Issa runs into Nathan from the “Party Uber.”

For lunch, Issa picks up her salmon taco at Worldwide Tacos. However, the lunch gets dropped when Nathan runs into her. A disappointed Issa gets Nathan to buy her another taco, which will take an hour to cook.

Nathan was in the neighborhood anyways to try the tacos. The two of them seem to hit things off. His haircut client flaked on him so he has plenty of time to kill. He convinces Issa to show him around, shading the fact L.A. people “don’t like to walk.”

“You’re gonna get enough of shading my city.” – Issa

She manages to take him to Leimert Park. She shows off the local businesses and suggests a barber shop for him to set up shop. However, he reveals that he likes the mobility, which is different from what he had in Houston, Texas.

“I like to keep it moving.” – Nathan

Next, they run into Lawrence’s friend Chad’s realtor bus-stop ad. He proudly wears a bluetooth while smiling. They two proceed in clowning the photo. Nathan then asks if they shot “Training Day” here.

Issa explains that the movie was shot in near-by neighborhood, The Jungles. Freida texts Issa, telling her they can talk when she gets back. Nathan asks who text her.

“Just work stuff.” – Issa

“You gotta go?” – Nathan

“I gotta take this n**** named Nanceford to the Jungles.” – Issa

They both smile and they head off.

Molly gets some job advice from her therapist.

Molly’s using her lunch to vent to her therapist. She tells her therapist she’s frustrated because she can’t find her place in the law firm, and Tauren out-talked her.

“I should be halfway to gumbo with the partners’ wives by now” – Issa

Molly’s therapist tells her that she could be less frustrated with the law-firm if she instead focused on how she could be a better contributor to the team.

In the process, Molly slips up and brings up Dre.

Issa and Nathan make it to the Jungles and Nathan calls the hood ice. He says it pales in comparison to the hoods in Houston.

Issa gets Nathan to yell out the infamous “Training Day” king-kong line, and a woman throws trash at him from a window.

“Told you. They don’t play.” – Issa

Issa and Nathan bond in the Jungles and via skinny-dipping.

Nathan gets inspired to play Truth or Dare. Issa picks truth and he asks her about her last relationship. She tells Nathan that her last relationship of 5 years, to which she cheated.

“He didn’t deserve it. No one deserves it. But, I kinda messed up.” – Issa

Nathan appreciated the honesty.

“We all got something. We just gotta grow from it.” – Nathan

Eventually, Nathan gets Issa to take him into her old neighborhood, Windsor Hills. But before this happens, Issa calls Freida, telling her she doesn’t feel good, unable to return to work.

Afterwards, they end up in front of her old home. Her parents sold the home after they divorced. Issa’s disappointed because they had a pool installed when the divorce occurred.

Nathan dares Issa to break-in, and she obliges, opening the gate, walking into the back yard.

Issa then dares Nathan to jump into the pool, naked. Nathan obliges, stripping down to nothing, jumping into the pool. Not to be out-done, Nathan convinces Issa to skinny dip herself.

As they are in the pool, Issa tells Nathan about talent shows she hosted in their backyard, her rap journal, and how she raps in the mirror.

She notices a scar on Nathan’s body and is inspired to probe into his past. He tells Issa that he never had a relationship as long as hers, noting the Houston women and him were interested in that. He also comments that L.A. is “…just not what I expected.”

“It’s hard to start over.” – Nathan

He proceeds to tell Issa how Hurricane Harvey destroyed his apartment, and he used the rebuilding opportunity to relocate to Los Angeles, something he always wanted to do.

“There’s nothing tying me down but me.” – Nathan

“So you just left everything behind?” – Issa

“Sometimes, you just gotta go for it, even when it doesn’t make sense to everybody else.” – Nathan

This seems to inspire Issa to say she needs to do something more career wise.

But their deep moment gets interrupted by the home’s residents, who call the police on them. So, Issa and Natan run out of the pool.

They make it to the car and Nathan isn’t ready to end their time together.

Molly seems to take her therapist’s advice.

Back at work, Issa runs into Felica and Stacy. Molly offers to help Felicia and Stacy on their case, claiming she had the bandwidth to help despite her case still ongoing.

Issa made it to her place and Tiffany sends a text about the house booked for Coachella. Issa’s hyped for it. Nathan’s there with her and she tells him about it. While they’re talking, the two exchange a kiss.

Just as things get passionate, a kid comes to knock on Issa’s door. His mom sent him because they’re locked out of their place. They both accuse Issa of changing their locks.

The kid also notices Nathan, proceeding to pick on them both.

“Oooh! What y’all doin? Eating tacos and kissing in the mouth?” – kid

Issa closes the door on him as Nathan prepares to leave. He thanks her for the L.A. Day, giving her a kiss. Nathan opens the door and the kid’s still waiting.

Issa quits We Got Y’all.

The next day, Molly runs into Felicia and Stacy at work. They want to meet with her in the evening to talk over their case, however, Molly doesn’t have time. When Molly heads into Taurean’s office, Felicia and Stacy give Molly a major side-eye.

Issa’s getting ready for work, and comes across the old items Molly told her to throw out. She looks at them, thinking about what Nathan said, and throws them in the garbage.

Finally, Issa’s at We Got Y’all and Freida walks over. Freida’s ready to ask about Issa’s next assignment. However, Issa has something else in mind.

“I’m sorry, I… I can’t do this anymore.” – Issa

“What do you mean?” – Freida

“I mean… I need something new. I’m quitting.” – Issa

The episode ends with Issa walking out of the We Got Y’all office smiling.
