‘Greenleaf’ Recap: Mae Kicks James Out, Jacob Crosses The Line + Zora Moves Out

Grace flashes back to her fight with Uncle Mac.

The episode opens with Grace reading over her first defense fund case. She comes across graphic photos of the woman’s husband beaten to death with a hammer. The images bring up flashbacks of her attack from Mac.

Sophia awakens Grace from the daydream. She needs help from Grace about no longer doing Little Saints. Sophia’s not even sure if she believes in God anymore.

Grace agrees to talk to the pastor over the Sunday school for Sophia.

Zora turns 18.

Zora’s sleeping in, at least trying to. It’s her birthday and Mae wakes her up early. Zora’s parents are coming over for breakfast and Mae wants to get an early start on the scripture.

James tries to grab Charity for their breakfast with Jacob and Kerissa. Charity’s still snippy as she’s coming off her dependency of pain killers. Yet they share a hug when James tells her he misses her.

Kerissa brought her and Zora tickets for Hamilton. However, Zora can’t go because she’s on punishment still. Kerissa tries to get Jacob to put his foot down, but Jacob sides with Mae’s thought process.

James and Mae decide to get petty.

Later on, Mae learns from her secretary Karine and Maxine’s assistant Gloria that James moved his Silver Year Jubilee to the same day as her “Day with Lady Mae.” event. So Mae decides to move the event to the church. Mae also clashes with Grace when she learns about the church’s defense fund being called to action.

Mae doesn’t want anything outshining her final event in the church, which she’s trying to use to help push James out of the church. She lets Grace know she will do everything in her power not to be outshined in the press by the use of this defense fund.

Grace tells her the woman is facing the death penalty, but Mae doesn’t care.

James calls Percy but his call gets cut short when Mae walks into his office. She tries to persuade James into stopping Grace from using the defense fund but he disregards this for the moment, at least. James sits her down and explains how he can use cryptocurrency to pay their tax bill.

“Oh. This is Rochelle at work.” – Mae

James says he will stop Grace if Mae goes along with his plan, but Mae says no.

“It’s your mess. You made the bed, and you lie in it.” – Mae

Grace runs across the D.A. that almost tried her for the murder of her Uncle Mac.

Meanwhile, Grace heads over to the jail to speak to the Coralee Hunter. While there, she meets Winston Lewis, the Shelby county D.A.

“That pond you’re about to step into… It could be deeper than you think.” – Winston

Charity gets a call from Percy. Percy needs Charity to come and sing at a memorial service at the last moment. He gets persuasive and agrees.

Back at Triumph, Kerissa and Jacob argue about Mae being strict. She brings up a good point; Zora’s 18 and isn’t bound by any law to stay where she is. However, Jacob stills stands behind Mae, which angers Kerissa.

Just before Grace meets with Coralee, she experiences flashbacks of her fight with Mac. She snaps out of it when Coralee heads to her table. Coralee begins by saying she doesn’t believe in God and remains aggressive with Grace.

She explains to Grace what happened and says she glad it happened. Coralee explains her husband threatened to physically abuse their children.

Charity managed to clean herself up to sing at the homegoing services at Percy’s funeral home. Meanwhile, Karine brings over documents of James to sign. He’s perplexed to see a line-item for security. This angers James because he learned that her and Maxine will having their event at the church.

So James heads over to her office to remind her about their bargain.

“I’ll go where the Lord wants me to go, and I imagine you will do the same.” – Mae

Jacob and Tasha cross the line, kissing.

Tasha’s in Jacob’s office and pries into Jacob’s worries. She persuades him to tell her about what’s been going on with Kerissa. He’s bothered by Kerissa still not looking past his past infidelity.

Tasha brings up how she was in her past and she knows she’s been forgiven. She goes in for a hug and then kisses Jacob. He kisses her back.

Rochelle stops by James’ office and hands her a check of the money in the joint account with Mae. They then share a drink. Meanwhile, Darius asks about her meeting with Coralee. This brings up a flash back with her fight with Mac. She recalls when Mac told her to call 911 and she said, “Not until you tell me where my daughter is.”

Jacob leaves the church in a hissy. He stops at a stop sign desperately trying to wipe Tasha’s lipstick from his mouth. He stops when another car honks at him.

James crossed the line, draining their joint bank account.

Mae gets into a fit of anger when she checks her joint account with James, only to discover it’s been drained. She needed the cash to make a deposit for their caterer to work her event. She has Karine and Gloria leave her office when she discovers this.

Once he left the shower, Jacob tells Kerissa he changed his mind on Zora. He will head with her to Mae’s to bring her home.

Mae confronts James about the move he made earlier. His actions got him kicked out of the house.

“This time take every suit, every robe, and every gaudy knickknacks. I want you to take it all.” – Mae

James obliges.

Sophia Breaks down crying and Zora decides to move out.

Grace runs into Sophia’s bathroom, breaking down crying, tearing pages from her bible.

“The Bible is all lies.” – Sophia

She’s adamant about moving on from God and her religion. James appeared ready to move on too when he showed up to Percy’s home with his belongings.

The next day, Kerissa and Jacob are getting their son ready to head over Mae’s to pick up Zora. Meanwhile, Mae asks Zora to take over Little Saints for Sophia, but she says no. Mae tries her best to convince Zora to do it, as Zora packs. However, Zora said no.

“Even If I could, I can’t. I’m leaving. In about 10 minutes.” – Zora

The episode ends with Zora leaving.
