A lot of folks are still talking about “Surviving R. Kelly.”
And some of those who appeared in the documentary are saying more in interviews.
During a recent interview with Madame Noire, Sparkle claimed that her career took a hit after she told the world that it was her niece in the infamous video with R. Kelly.
In fact, she revealed that it was Toni Braxton and Toni’s sisters who held her down during that dark period.
She said:
I moved to Vegas. It was a woman who came and picked me back up off the floor and said, ‘come on out here, girl. I got a gig for you so you can eat.’
My big sis, mentor Toni Braxton. And the Braxtons.
They were, other than my partner in life and in business…he and his family, having my back, holding me up. The Braxtons were definitely there as a sisterhood.
Because at this point, I have no sisters. They ain’t talking to me. None of my family is speaking to me, except for one of my brothers. And he’s had my back from day one. Benny.
Thanks to Toni, Sparkle was able to work again.
But they held me up. Toni told me, come out there. ‘I got you.’
And I did her show with her out on the strip for three years. And loved them for it because they were the only ones really who had my back as well.
Sparkle also gave an update on where she stands with her sister. She claimed they didn’t speak for ten years but came back together in 2011.
So from 01 to 2011, I had no dealings with them. I would come and visit my parents here and there. And if they were there, they would quickly leave.
But what brought us back together in 2011 was my parents 50th anniversary. And we put them on a big shindig for their 50th.
And it brought us back together in a big way.
However, the documentary has put a dent in the relationship, yet again.
And from 2011 to right when the trailer dropped for this thing, we’ve been rocking. I lost my mom, October. After we laid her to rest, two days later the trailer dropped. And then we were back right where we were as if it were 01 again and even worse because now we’re older.
