Dr. King’s Niece Receives Criticism for Using King Legacy to Battle Against Abortion

By: Amanda Anderson

When we think about the Civil Rights Movement, most of us can agree that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was indeed the father of the era, and the most recognized Civil Rights activist in African American history. Although King’s life was cut too short, his legacy lives through not only his work, but his children, nieces, and nephews who are all activists in their own right. Just like the legend, the new generation of King activists aren’t without criticism.

King’s niece, Dr. Alveda King, has dedicated herself to fighting against abortion and fighting for the rights of the unborn. While her cause may be notable to most (depending on your political and religious views), her platform based on using her Uncle’s legacy to garner media attention is not sitting well with most.

Dr. Alveda Kind responded in a statement Thursday:

“It is absolutely ludicrous that abortion supporters would accuse a blood relative of Dr. King of hijacking the King legacy.” My dad and my uncle gave their lives to ensure that the day would come when blacks would be judged not by the color of their skin, but the content of their character. If they were here, I know they would stand with me in this fight for the lives of those most vulnerable among us.”
Although African American women are more likely to get abortion than white women (according to research), critics argue that all women should have the right to make a conscious decision on whether or not to go through with a pregnancy. Pro Choice supporters argue that with the right education and support from surrounding Parent Planhood clinics, women will be able to make the best choice for their current situation.

Regardless of the outrage from critics, Dr. Alveda King plans to continue to use her family’s legacy to gather attention for her cause. She plans to boycott the abortion industry on Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial.
