There is always argument went it comes to who is the “Real HU” in the MEAC conference. Is it Howard University or Hampton University? Other than the legendary rivalry between the Aggies of North Carolina A & T State University and the North Carolina Central University Eagles, this match up is one of the most competitive in the history of HBCU sports. And fans across the nation are always fired up to see these two clubs go head to head. The battle took place this Saturday. And let’s just say that team hailing from the 757 emerged as the “Real HU” this go around.
Although they came out on top, the Hampton Pirates didn’t win this one without a challenge from Howard. Bison third-string quarterback Casey Council ran for a 15 year touchdown in the first quarter, putting Howard on the scoreboard. Council was a nightmare for the Pirates throughout the first half. But Hampton was still able to even things up before the close of the half at 14-14.
Two consecutive series in the third quarter resulted in two back to back touchdowns for the Pirates with less than 5 minutes left in the third. Howard’s initial explosive delivery from their offense soon began to fizzle out as the Pirates took over for the remainder of the game.
Hampton defeated Howard 31-21. The Bison are now 0-2. Hopefully, they will find a victory in their next game against Florida A&M.
