Beauty Secrets: What’s the Best Way to Rock Red Lipstick?

Q. I am not really big into lip stick. I actually think it has more to do with my age, than my lack of knowledge in beauty products. I just prefer the shine and moisture of lip glosses, than the traditional lip stick. But since I am attempting to fulfill new year beauty resolutions, I have decided to attempt to wear a little more lipstick and at least give it a chance before I forsake it all together. I actually want to rock a bold red retro lip, but I’m not sure how to do it without looking like Bozo the Clown. What tips do you suggest in rocking red lipstick? – Jasmine C.

A. Hello Jasmine,

Red lipstick has to be one of my favorites in my makeup bag. I know on average we’re a lip gloss addicted generation, but lip stick has some advantages as well. I actually prefer the opacity of lipstick verses the less opaque coverage of lip gloss. So when I rock bolder colors, I go for the sticks versus the glosses. And I must say, I’m a sucker for a great red lip.

When rocking red lipstick, I suggest:

1. Using a great liner. Now, it’s great to find a red liner that is close in shade to your lipstick. By lining the lips, you’ll diminish the bleeding effect that is usually caused by red lipstick. But with enough practice, you’ll eventually be able to forsake using a liner.

2. Stay true to your tone. Know the good reds from the bad ones. Orange undertones look best on lighter complexions, while deeper reds looks best on darker tones. Blue based reds are safer than the orange toned reds, and generally work for most skin tones.

3. Light makeup is key when rocking the red lip. It’s always best to wear lighter eyeshadow when wearing red lipstick, as darker eye makeup makes one appear as if they are wearing too much makeup. Even a nude face is perfect for the red lip.
