President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have been credited for proving black love is still possible between two successful black people.  It’s no secret that a career in politics is stressful enough that it could usually drive a wedge between any couple, these two have managed to make their marriage work. Michelle Obama has even admitted that she was never really too comfortable with the idea of her husband running for president, but she decided to support him because it was his dream. Not only did President Obama become the first African American president of the United States, but he is also the first black man to get a second term. And he did both with landslide victories.

In a recent interview with 20/20, the First Couple talked about how they manage to keep their marriage together despite politics. Of course they joked around and even discussed how annoying the President is to play a game of Scrabble against. Regardless, throughout the interview, it’s clear the love between these two is so authentic that not even politics or stressful campaigns can change any of that.

Here’s a couple of my favorite quotes from the interview.

On marriage:

(The President) “Like every marriage, I think you have your ups and you have your downs, but one of the things that has happened is that if you’ve worked through the tough times, the respect and love that you feel deepens. We end up feeling, after 20 years, just the sense of you can’t imagine your life without the other person. And you can’t imagine sort of another partner that would give you more lasting satisfaction.”

On adjusting to being in Politics:

(First Lady) “I have learned from my husband, watching him, that [elected office] does require a great deal of patience to really feel the full impact of the work that you do on the ground. I’ve had to learn about what real change means, and how much it takes to really get things done. ”

(The President) “Privately, you know, there — She has opinions,” he said with a grin. “She’s got a few views.”

The President also talked about how great it is to have Secret Service considering that his daughter Malia has a cell phone now and boys are interested in her.
