The Onion Apologizes for Offensive Quvenzhané Wallis Tweet, Christine Teigen Doesn’t

By: Amanda Anderson-Niles

Quvenzhané Wallis was supposed to have a big night considering that she’s the youngest actress to ever be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Wallis was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Beasts of the Southern Wild, and although she didn’t win the award, her amazing moment was overshadowed by one tweet from satirical news publication, The Onion. Last night, whoever was running the publication’s Twitter account at the moment made their feelings about the young actress known. After someone on the staff of The Onion called Wallis a derogatory four letter word for women (cu*t), the social networks began to explode.

Here’s the tweet that caused all the controversy:

Quenzhane Wallis the onion tweet

It’s pretty understandable that a lot of people were outraged by the tweet, so the publication issued an apology on its official Facebook page regarding the matter:

On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive—not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting.

No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire.

The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication. We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again.

In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.

Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry.

Sincerely,

Steve Hannah
CEO
The Onion

Interestingly enough, John Legend’s fiancée Christine Teigen also made a lot of people furious because of some comments she also made about Quvenzhané Wallis. She called the young actress cocky and refused to apologize (read from the bottom up):

In related news, despite all the controversy, Quvenzhané Wallis is still on pace to continue to do big things. It has been confirmed that the young actress will play Annie in Will Smith and Jay-Z’s remake.

Congrats to Quvenzhané Wallis.

  1. Had this little girl have been white, they would have called her self confidence “adorable” like they do all the other grown a-s kiddie white actresses. And Christine needs to shut the hell up. She doesn’t have a job except to fake like John Legend is heterosexual.

    1. THIS!!!!! They keep trying to tear down these little black girls. First Gabby Douglas and now Quvenzhane. It’s so unfair.

  2. And this is why I don’t like Christine. She has an unhealthy sense of self-importance that she really shouldn’t have. What talent does she have besides bearding?

  3. This young actress has already achieved more in her life at 9 years old than Christine & any editor of The Onion ever will. LOL.

  4. This is like the third time John Legend’s beard has put her foot in her mouth. Could he not find a beard that knows how to beard and keep it cute on Twitter?

  5. I still can’t believe they tweeted that. People are so stupid. Calling a child something like that just shows me how messed up our society really is.

  6. Whoa. I can’t believe people can talk so viciously about a little girl. What’w wrong with having confidence at her age? Smh.

  7. Is Christine serious? The whole world watched her husband get off that piano in the Ordinary People video and sashay away like a queen. She can’t talk nasty about anyone.

  8. That is so sad and disgraceful calling that little girl such an awful name like that. As for John Legend’s boo, he better rethink making ole girl his wifey especially if he plans on having children! That woman needs the devil casted out of her!

  9. I’m usually against violence, but ole better not let me catch her in a dark alley…The Onion should’ve called a cunt…
