The Serena Williams Maria Sharapova rivalry is one of the most noted ones in tennis as both women are forces to be reckoned with on the court. Serena Williams just came off another huge victory in her career, snagging her 16th Grand Slam title at the 2013 French Open. And while the tennis sensation continues to add to her trophy collection, Serena stuck a nerve in many people with the recent comments she made about the Steubenville rape case during her interview with Rolling Stone as some felt she was blaming the victim for being raped.
On whether or not the teenage boys’ punishment was fair, Serena says:
“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you—don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”
The tennis superstar angered many as a lot of people felt her comments were very insensitive and she issued an apology shortly after. Serena’s comments on the rape case weren’t the only ones that rubbed people the wrong way. Apparently, Serena criticized Maria Sharapova and her boyfriend male tennis star Grigor Dimitrov. And Maria called Serena out on it during her pre-Wimbledon press conference about it and puts the tennis star on blast:
“At the end of the day, we have a tremendous amount of respect for what we do on the court. But I just think that she should be talking about her accomplishments, her achievements rather than everything else that’s just getting attention and controversy. And If she wants to talk about something personal, you know maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids. You know, talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things. She has so much in her life, many positives, and I think that’s what it should be about.”
The “boyfriend” she is referring to is Serena Williams’ tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou. The two have been rumored to be romantically involved with each other. Both Patrick and Serena have been tight-lipped about the extent of their relationship.
Maria received a hand clap from some people who were glad to see her rip Serena while others think she is still salty over Serena shutting her down at this year’s French Open.

Maria Sharapova is the Kim Kardashian of tennis. No talent, just looks (and even that’s up for debate). She needs to stop starting drama to take attention away from the fact that she’s overrated.
