Janelle Monae gay? Janelle Monae is vastly becoming someone a lot of people have high expectations for when it comes to today’s music industry. The singer has proven on numerous occasions that she is just as entertaining to watch on stage as she is to listen to. But it’s not just her music that screams “different.” Janelle has also made it clear that she just views music in a different way and she has even gone as far as to commit to dressing in black and white and not revealing much skin because she feels it will distract people from her talent. With the recent release of Janelle’s second studio album “Electric Lady,” Janelle proves again that she could possibly become one of music’s biggest stars.
Interestingly enough, the singer has many curious about her sexuality. But in a recent interview with “Sway in the Morning,” she dodges the question in such a way it’s managed to completely confuse people. When flat-out asked whether she prefers men or women, Janelle says:
“Women are amazing…and so are guys. There’s nothing wrong with being bisexual, there’s nothing wrong with being lesbian or gay. I am an advocate. I have friends who are in same-sex relationships and I feel love has no sexual orientation. Love has no religious belief. Love is the purest and most important thing we can possess for ourselves and for others.
“I keep my personal life very much to myself. I want everybody to focus on my music. I also don’t want to let anybody down. I want women to still be attracted to me. Go get my album! I want men to still be attracted to me so I have to be political in this. So I can’t really tell y’all!”
In related news, sales projections for Janelle’s latest album are out and it’s been projected that she will sell around 45-50k the first week. That’s lower than the recent releases from K. Michelle and Tamar Braxton.
Check out the clip below:
I don’t get any gay vibes from her. Am I missing something?
I think it may have been something she said in her lyrics that made some people think she was gay. I never got those vibes either.
The way she dances, the way she dresses; she’s not afraid to show her masculine side. Saw her last night and both of her cover songs were of men too, MJ and Prince, but then maybe that’s just because she has her eyes on being a King, not just another pop princess.
I guess she just wants to sound free spirited or whatever but she is NOT gay. She had a boyfriend while she was in college in Atlanta. I hate that all celebs want to sound so hip and liberal now that they will play the gay/bisexual card. And it won’t help your album sales Janelle.
Just because she had a boyfriend doesn’t mean she can’t be bisexual. I’m so sick and tired of people acting like bisexuality isn’t a real thing.
She’s overrated to me.
Wow, K. Michelle and Tamar might outsell her? Wasn’t expecting that.
Better music. I’m sorry, Janelle is cool and all but her music is overhyped and lacking. She’s a gimmick just like her bff Erykah Badu.
I’m confused. If she wears black and white because she doesn’t want anything to take away from her talent, why does she care so much about what gender is attracted to her? I thought it was supposed to be about the talent and she didn’t want to be sexy. She just contradicted her whole image.
Janelle said she wants women to still be attracted to her, as well as men. Did you not watch the interview? How is that contradicting herself? Please explain.
Well I can see why she may not sell that many albums. She doesn’t have a hit and she’s still a mystery to most people. I know the whole privacy thing is fair but people don’t want that anymore. They want to know who you are and your business. The less you talk, the more forgettable you become. I think that’s why Beyonce has exposed herself a lot more. Times have changed.
I actually listened to the album and I will say you can tell she worked hard on the album and it really is a different and eclectic. Some of the songs sound very motownish which is a good thing. She really is a trendsetter but with that said it is not my cup of tea I really wanted to like the album but I didn’t. Only songs I liked was Primetime feat Miguel and Electric lady feat Solange out of 19 songs. It’s just not easy to listen to it’s not fluid in my opinion. Enough of a whole album review but this what happens when you are stuck at work on a Saturday lol.
Well I have her album and I love it. I don’t care about her sexuality… She’s a musical genius in my opinion. *shrug*
Hate when artist said focus on the music and not their personal life. its bull shyt. your music is an extension of who you are or should be. we want to know where the music is coming from. When i listen to Rihanna’s unapologetic i know where its coming from. When i listen to “Stay or what now” we all know where it coming from
Yeah, we also know Rihanna’s a slut. We know that she’s a private person. You wanna know so much about the artist’s personal life because you have no f-cking life your own self
