Nate Parker’s upcoming film “Birth of a Nation” has been plagued with controversy since his past rape case has taken center stage in the media.
Amid the controversy, Nate is now discussing his love for black women.
Madame Noire writes:
While speaking after a screening of The Birth of a Nation at The Merge Summit in Hollywood this week, Parker responded to that particular criticism in a conversation with interviewer Jawn Murray.
“My wife is not African American,” Parker said. “I met my wife in college when I was 18 or 19. Nineteen? When I was 19. I fell in love with her. We’ve been together off and on since then. We got married nine years ago, August 10.”
Parker continued, noting that while his wife isn’t Black, she cares about the community and is, of course, raising Black children.
“She’s the love of my life. She’s not of African descent but she reads the books that I give her. She knows that she’s raising Black kids. I say that to say that I know I came under criticism for that and not that I have to speak to it. But I want everyone that can hear my voice to know that I love my wife but I love ya’ll, too.”
Who is his publicist? He really needs to stop doing interviews for the rest of the year.
So black women are supposed to be a security blanket, huh? F-ck that. He needs to take this upcoming flop with some damn dignity.
Wrong move.
He really needs to shut the hell up.
Chile…
I’m trying to figure out why we, black women, are so upset he married a white woman? Just because he’s married to a white doesn’t mean he doesn’t have love for respect for black women. His mother is black and he’s raising five black daughters. I know my dad got this cr@p when he married my mother, who is Puerto Rican but looks white. Do people not realize hating or disagreeing with interracial couples is an insult to the product of their union, i.e. their children?
I really wish all these celebrities living in Beverly Hills with thier white spouses stop fronting like they down for the cause
Meh, he’s pandering.
I really hate how everything turned out for this guy. I was so excited for the movie but it’s been such a huge mess. At this point, he just needs to let the movie speak for itself. Those who want to support will.
I’ll say it again, if Nate’s wife was black, black women would be supporting him in full force right now. And I think that’s messed up. But whatever. Y’all have a good weekend.
I have mixed feelings. He probably means this but it seems like damage control because of the timing.
