Maxine quickly finds a replacement for Moe.
Maxine hires Portia as a test, a lesbian lifestyle guru.
“That’s Portia Camden. She’s a lifestyle guru. She’s me, only black.” – Heather
Portia comes up to introduce herself to Kibby, Heather and Nina and it’s clear that Heather is already intimidated.
The good news for Heather is Portia was hired only on a try-out basis. Heather tells Kibby and Nina that they need to work together to make sure Portia won’t be able to secure a permanent spot.
Nina has an embarrassing moment during taping and accidentally farts wile discussing the Zika outbreak.
Kibby’s sober coach, Julian, tells her to apologize to Maddie.
Kibby had a pretty nasty fallout with her former costar on another show, Maddie. It turns out Kibby pushed her during filming, and as a result, Maddie filed a restraining order against her. However, it’s now been lifted and Julian thinks it would be a smart move for Kibby to reach out and make peace.
“No, f*ck her.” – Kibby
“You assaulted her. You need to take responsibly for your actions.” – Julian
Anna is avoiding Maxine’s calls.
Maxine is still trying to stop Anna from moving forward with the tell-all book. However, Anna is now ignoring her calls and not returning her messages.
There’s then a flashback scene to when Maxine was working as a news anchor and got news from her husband and producer at the time that the “Lunch Hour” was being picked up.
Ramona walks in while Maxine has thoughts about her earlier days with her husband, and Ramona asks if she can have an opportunity to step up and produce a segment.
With one of the producers being out due to his wife going into labor, Ramona asks to produce Heather’s Gospel single segment.
Mo agrees to give her a shot but assigns Ramona to calling Anna all day until she picks up.
Shawn informs Maxine that Leon could sue for s*xual harassment as a result of his fling with Mo, so they will keep him happy to steer him away from filing a suit. They will put him in charge of producing Heather’s Gospel single segment.
Ramona walks in and overhears that Leon will be producing Heather’s segment instead. Despite her disappointment, Ramona tells Maxine that she couldn’t get in touch with Anna.
Maxine pays Anna a visit.
Maxine drops by Anna’s house to ask her what she wants so the book can be tossed. Anna tells Maxine it isn’t about money or material things. She tells Maxine she wants another bestseller because it will be another win for her career. She also mentions that she’s been talking to Maxine’s neighbor Phillip and he had a lot to say about her marriage to Ted.
“I guess the walls are kind of thin.” – Anna
Maxine tells Anna that Phillip shouldn’t be trusted because he’s crazy.
“Now I’ve asked you nicely to drop this book. Now I’m going to have to be less nice. You really want to tango with me?” – Maxine
“I’m not afraid of you Maxine. You have no power over me anymore.” – Anna
“We’ll see.” – Maxine
Heather gets shut down by Brad.
Heather is stressing about Portia being on the show. She asks Brad what she should wear to her launch event, but he’s still upset with her for forcing hm to move into the basement.
“Heather, you sent me packing to the basement. That means I no longer have to pretend to care about what you wear.” – Brad
Heather then asks him to come to the launch to offer support, but Brad isn’t interested and turns down the invitation.
Maxine is ready to fire a few warning shots.
Maxine tells her lover William that she went to speak to Anna because she is still moving forward with the book. So now it’s time for her to shoot a few warning shots.
There’s then a flashback scene of Maxine riding in a car with her husband holding an Emmy she beat out Oprah for. He questions why she didn’t thank him in her speech.
She apologizes and tells him she meant to thank him but got caught up in the moment.
Soon after, Maxine runs into Phillip and lets him know that she’s aware he’s been talking to Anna. Phillip gets enjoyment from knowing Maxine is concerned about his conversations with Anna.
Portia reassures Heather.
Heather goes to the studio and sees that Kibby and Nina have taken a liking to Portia. She gets frustrated when she finds them happily eating some of Portia’s orange zest and rosemary hush puppies. When Portia offers her a taste, Heather declines.
“No, thank you. I don’t usually care for food that’s too busy.” – Heather
“Heather, you have to try one.” – Nina
“They’re insane.” -Kibby
“So much for icing her out. Mo would have had my back” – Heather
“I really wanted to but she got me through fart-gate.” – Nina
“And she’s so fun.” – Kibby
“Only because she’s not a threat to you.” – Heather
When Portia overhears the conversation, she asks to have a private moment to speak to Heather. Kibby and Nina oblige.
“What do you think, I’m trying to step on your toes or something?” – Portia
Portia reminds Heather that she’s been on “The Lunch Hour” for years so there’s no need for her to be intimidated. She tells her that she’s figured out that Heather likes to say “wack sh*t” that nobody in their right mind would ever agree with and she lacks confidence to be a better co-host.
When Portia tells Heather that she would never let some “b*tch” come in and try to take her job, Heather finally gets riled up and demands Portia allows her to speak.
“Let me finish, please!” – Heather
“There you go.” – Portia
“I’m just protective of my brand. That’s all.” – Heather
“And you should be. You don’t have to worry about me. You have to remember you’re a bad a*s. You’ve got your own thing going on. You’re very white. We don’t overlap.” – Portia
Heather finally calms down and takes a hush puppy.
Shawn and Nina are still trying to figure out how to deal with Andrew.
Shawn rubs Nina’s feet as she tells him that she’s really tired but has yet another event she has to attend with Andrew. Shawn tells her she needs to rest since she’s been battling morning sickness, and it’s time for her to tell Andrew that he’s the father of her baby.
Nina once again tells him the timing isn’t right.
Maxine pushes Kibby to apologize to Maddie.
Maxine urges Kibby to apologize to Maddie and to do it live on air. She feels doing so will be a huge boost for Kibby’s career.
Kibby doesn’t want to make peace with Maddie but she agrees to issuing the apology any way out of respect for Maxine. She didn’t really have much of a choice anyway, since Maddie has already been booked to appear on the show.
Maxine begins her assault on Anna’s career.
Leon and Maxine go pick up tickets and backstage passes for an upcoming Sia concert. When asked her name, Maxine tells the person at the counter that her name is Anna Krouse.
She receives the passes and gives them to Leon.
“If you get arrested, call Ramona.” – Maxine
When Anna later arrives to pick up the passes so she can interview Sia, she learns that the tickets have already been picked up.
She makes a scene while screaming that she is Anna Krouse and gets handcuffed and escorted out by security.
Maxine calls Anna to rub it in.
“Sorry about Sia. I know your editor is losing faith in you. Consider yourself warned.” – Maxine
Heather stands up to Shawn.
Heather and Portia are preparing for their cooking segment together when Shawn walks in and tells them the segment has been bumped so Nick Jonas can sing a second song.
“But we’re worked so hard on this.” – Heather
“What do you think about this, Heather? – Portia
“Well, it’s a little disrespectful. These ribs have been braising for three hours. Don’t make me call my agent.” – Heather
Shawn is surprised by Heather’s tone and confidence. He decides to remind Nick’s team that the agreement was just one song.
Anna recovers from Maxine’s warning shot.
Turns out Anna was able to reschedule her interview with Sia. She calls Maxine and leaves her voicemail thanking Maxine for giving her more time to work on the book.
Maxine then makes a phone call pretending to be calling on behalf of Sia and gives Anna the wrong addresses to the interview location.
Heather’s feelings about Portia develop.
Things are going so well between Portia and Heather that Heather begins to daydream about kissing Portia. This freaks her out. This also causes her to start having awkward interactions with Portia while taping for the show.
Shawn confronts Andrew.
Andrew and Shawn run into each other in the studio’s bathroom. Shawn tells Andrew that he couldn’t help but notice how tired Nina has been lately as a result of having to attend so many fundraiser events. He suggests Andrew gives her the night off.
When Andrew questions how it’s any of Shawn’s business, Shawn tells him that it’s his business since he’s Nina’s producer.
“I see. You’re asking as a producer. I thought it was because you’re the father of her baby. Oh, did Nina not mention I know?” – Andrew
Shawn is surprised to learn that Andrew knows about his affair with Nina.
Maxine goes to visit Anna’s editor.
After ruining Anna’s interview with Sia twice, Maxine is now ready to get her fired.
She goes to see Anna’s editor while he’s getting ready for his charity basketball game. He thanks her for her very generous donation.
He tells her that things just haven’t been working out with Anna. Maxine then mentions that she had similar issues with Anna when she worked for her.
Maddie and Kibby come face to face.
Maddie runs into Kibby before she goes to get her hair and makeup down for the show. Surprisingly, she tells Kibby that she’s happy to see her and still considers her a friend. She’s ready to move on from what happened in the past because she feels they were really young when it went down.
The encounter confuses Kibby.
Shawn is cold towards Nina.
Nina tells Shawn that she’s finally feeling better but Shawn doesn’t seem too interested in talking to her.
“Are you ok?” – Nina
“No, I’m not.” – Shawn
He walks off.
Maddie switches up on Kibby.
Despite their pleasant run-in earlier in the day, when Maddie comes out and goes to hug Kibby, she lets out a light scream and tells the audience she’s suffering from PTSD.
“What?” – Kibby
“I’m sorry. I’m so embarrassed. I’m just working through some of the PTSD from what happened.” – Maddie
She tells the rest of the panel that she’s been getting therapy ever since Kibby pushed her and that she’s still afraid to be in the same room with her.
Kibby isn’t buying it but she goes through with the “apology” anyway.
“Maddie, I’m sorry for the way I treated you. I was always jealous that I wasn’t a part of your posse. I knew you only hung out with thin girls but…” – Kibby
“That’s not really true…” – Maddie
“That’s my truth. I actually thought I was fat even though I wasn’t because of some comments I overheard you say.” – Kibby
“I never said you were fat.” – Maddie
“No, no, no…I was just talking about my part. I guess I just wasn’t confident enough in myself to join in on the coke parties you always had in your dressing room.” – Kibby
“I actually never…can we go to commercial?” – Maddie
“Absolutely not.” – Maxine
Kibby then reveals that Maddie hooked up with her old boyfriend and gave him Chlamydia. Maddie corrects Kibby and says her ex boyfriend actually gave Herpes.
“And I am so sorry that your spin-off got yanked off after six episodes because I was right. You can’t carry a show.” – Kibby
“And now we can go to commercial.” – Maxine
After the segment, Maxine tells Kibby she’s proud of the way she handled Maddie. Maddie then walks up on Kibby and tells her that she plans to tell the media how she was able to keep her job on her former show for so long.
“Slut.” – Maddie
When Julian asks her what Maddie is referring to, Kibby doesn’t feel like talking about it.
Heather and Portia hash out their issues.
Heather comes by Portia’s dressing room to apologize for acting weird in the previous segment. Portia accepts her apology but questions why Heather switched up on her.
Heather reveals that she started to feel like Portia was crushing on her but Portia tells her she’s married and not remotely attracted to Heather.
Shawn updates Nina.
Nina confronts Shawn about his cold behavior towards her earlier, and he tells her about his run-in with Andrew. Hr questions why she didn’t tell him that Andrew knew about their affair and the pregnancy, but Nina starts to feel intense pains.
Andrew comes to see about her and takes her to the hospital. She later finds out that everything is fine and she just had an upset stomach. Nina and Andrew tell Maxine that they are expecting.
Heather has conflicting feelings at her launch.
Heather talks with her pastor at the launch for her gospel song, and strikes up a conversation about her troubled marriage and her fantasies about Portia.
Her pastor seems to think she’s not really attracted to Portia but the attention she’s receiving.
She breaks down in tears and tells him she misses feeling special. After he tells her that she’s very beautiful, they share a kiss and she slaps him
Anna gives in to Maxine.
Anna calls Maxine to tell her she’s been fired and she knows Maxine was behind it. She will drop the book if Maxine agrees to hire her as the new co-host.
Maxine agrees.
When Portia asks Maxine if she didn’t get the job because of her weirdness with Heather, Maxine lies and says yes.
Shawn loses control.
Andrew and Shawn have a very intense conversation behind the scenes at Heather’s launch. Andrew tells Shawn that things are going to be handled his way but things go left after he disrespects Nina.
“Sooner or later you were going to find out that your girlfriend isn’t just a whore. She’s a liar too.” – Andrew
Andrew gets fed up and punches Shawn in the face.
Andrew falls near the stage and Shawn unknowingly reveals Nina is pregnant with his baby with the microphones close by. Maxine is not happy.
At the end of the episode, there’s another flashback scene of Maxine getting shouted at and physically assaulted by her ex drunk husband. Meanwhile, Phillip plays a tape of Maxine and her ex husband arguing loudly.
What are your thoughts on the episode?
Why couldn’t Shawn be with an available black woman? I hate this storyline.
Mo was definitely missed. It was good seeing Tasha Smith though.
I hope Mo comes back she was funny. Tasha fits with the show but she gets annoying really fast.
