Rae Carruth Reveals He Wants Custody of His Son When Released from Prison

In a 15-page letter sent to Charlotte, NC’s WBTV, Rae Carruth expressed contrition and responsibility for the 1999 murder of Cherica Adams.

Rae also expressed a desire to care for his son Chancellor, who was born with cerebral palsy as a result of surviving his mother’s murder.

WBTV writes:

While Carruth touches on many topics in the letter, he says his main goal in writing it was to hopefully build a relationship with Chancellor one day. Carruth, now 44, feels like he owes him.

“I let him down as he came into this world and the only way that I can make that right and the only way I can work out my relationship with my son is to be there for him,” he said.

Adams has said in past interviews she plans to be at the prison gates with Chancellor when his father is released. She’s also said she is open to the two having a relationship. The day Carruth read that, he says he mailed visitation paperwork to Adams and invited them to Sampson County, but never received a response. Carruth knows he’s a stranger to his son but he wants to start building a relationship before his release.

In the letter, Carruth tells Adams she, of course, won’t live forever and he’d like to be the one to care fulltime for Chancellor eventually. He says he realized the responsibility that carries.

“I should be raising my son. His mother should be raising her son. Ms. Adams should not be doing this and I want that responsibility back,” he said. “I feel like he might not ever have his mother in his life but he could still have me and I could still make a difference and I don’t think that’s anyone’s responsibility when I’m still here”.

Through the photographs and videos Carruth has seen of Chancellor over the years, he says he sees himself, and Cherica, when he looks at his son.

Cherica’s mother, Shaundra Adams says that Rae will not be granted custody of Chancellor. She recently told the Charlotte Observer, “Chancellor will be raised either by me or, after I’m gone, by someone else who loves him and who knows him. He will never be raised by a stranger — someone he doesn’t know and who tried to kill him.”

  1. This man is evil. How do you try to kill the child and then come back years later to try to take him away from the ones who actually do love him?

  2. If he don’t take his evil a-s on somewhere. He literally tried to kill that kid. Succeeded in killing the mother all because he didn’t want to pay child support. No, he doesn’t deserve to have custody. And the audacity of him talking like he’s the victim. Gross!

  3. I hope the judge shuts him all the way down. If he was truly remorseful, he wouldn’t be putting her family through this.

  4. The sad thing is the girl’s mother already said she wants her grandson to have a relationship with him, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she end up giving him to him, his sick a-s probably going to try to finish what he started he’s disgusting!

  5. Hopefully, it’s all just talk. He doesn’t want custody it just sounds good to say. He’s trying to take the impact off what he did but, nobody is ever going to forget that, so if he already wasn’t such a fool he’s be talking about getting to know his son & not taking him, i don’t think he can get him first off, he killed his mother. Maybe he wants the check……….

    1. Let me understand. This man tried to kill bis son and Now he wants Customs.
