Taraji P. Henson is a woman that is fiercely loyal. Director and Producer Tyler Perry is a person Taraji showcases this loyalty towards. Some may conclude she’s loyal to a fault to Tyler Perry. However, in a recent interview with the LA Times, Taraji says he’s been good to her over the years.
In fact, Taraji tells the LA Times that Tyler has given her “good roles,” including a leading role in her newest movie “Acrimony.”
The LA Times writes:
This film marks the third time Henson and Perry and have worked together, following 2008’s “The Family That Preys” and 2009’s “I Can Do Bad All by Myself.” When asked why she keeps returning to Perry’s writing and directing tutelage, she says simply, “I trust him.
“He gives me good jobs and good roles,” she added. “The first time I worked with him, I got to work with Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard and Sanaa Lathan who I all look up to as an actress. Why would I turn that down as an artist? The next time we worked together, he called me the day after the Oscars when I was nominated and gave me my first leading role in a movie.
Taraji then is asked about her diverse fan base. The LA Times interviewer openly wondered how Taraji could work on a critically acclaimed film, and turn around to work with Tyler Perry, and exec-produced “Proud Mary.”
Taraji proudly proclaimed, “She’ll never be too good for a role.”
On my side of the table, folks have said, “She was so great in ‘Hidden Figures’ but then she went to ‘Proud Mary’ and ‘Acrimony.’ What’s going on?”
But you see, everywhere I go there’s an audience, right? [laughs] So if I do a movie like a “Hidden Figures,” everyone will come. I’ve got fans that have been riding with me since “Baby Boy” … . I’ll never turn my back on them. I’ll never be too good for a role.
It appears this attitude has been working for Taraji. Her new movie “Acrimony” reached number 2 in the box office its opening weekend. It earned over $17 million dollars, keeping pace with the number one movie of the same weekend.
I love how down to earth Taraji is. She never thinks she’s too good for anything.
She stays getting work…love that and she’s humble
She’s loyal and I think that’s a good thing.
I think Taraji’s movies will always do good because she has a huge fan base. Same thing with TP. That is why it’s so important for people to build actual fan bases.
I personally don’t think Tyler Perry’s movies are all that good but he clearly has audience who will support anything he does. I can’t hate on that.
I get what she’s saying but sometimes not being picky about your projects can hurt your bottom line. I know she’s not getting paid what she should.
I’m sure she doesn’t mean that literally, if not her personally, I’m sure her agent has probably turned down roles that are not a good look for her and only presented her with roles she would consider taking. and those are the roles she never turns down.
