Female Rapper Rundown: Eve Says Nicki Minaj Is No Competition And Trina Has A New Album

Update on the female emcees you love the most.

The female rap game may not be well respected just yet, but there is a lot of buzz in Hip-Hop regarding the latest sensation rapper Nicki Minaj and the re-appearance of some or rap’s unforgettable leading ladies. While it may appear that Minaj’s rapidly increasing popularity plays a huge part in the resurgence of some of rap’s most intriguing female emcees, it’s evident that a movement is taking place in the female rap game.

Here are the latest developments…

Rapper Eve has been missing for a couple of years, but she made a hard comeback on a Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad” remix that had everybody talking. As of today, it has been announced that Eve has departed from long time label Interscope Records.

Eve tells Vibe:

“[Interscope was] stupid because they didn’t drop me at first, they [just shelved me] and dropped the ball. After Tambourine they straight up were like, ‘Umm, yeah, nah, we’re not putting out the record.’ After that I was like ‘Yall gotta let me go. I’ve been here 11 years and you’re frontin on me?’ It got to that point.

I’m not going to talk sh*t about them, but I don’t appreciate the fact that they didn’t go the extra mile for me. They promised me the machine. The machine is basically the roll out. It’s ‘Yo, when [Flirt] comes out, we’ll give you this, we’ll give you that. And that’s what made me mad.

It’d be different if we didn’t have a mtg where people promised me shit. If they were just like ‘Oh we’re going to put the album out and see what happens,’ that would be one thing.”

And while she may be label-less right now, she still doesn’t find a need to be too concerned about Nicki Minaj’s success. She says:

“She definitely is a quirky chick. That’s a good word for her. When she had the Freddy Krueger gloves I was like, ‘Wow’. But at the same time, whatever you decide to do, especially in music, you gotta go hard and own it. You can’t be timid wearing Freddy Krueger gloves in a video. If you look insecure, people are going to be like, ‘Why are you doing that?’ You gotta f**king own it and she did.

I think that’s dope… Trust me, no one’s competition for me and that sounds cocky but I seriously live in such an Eve world. And not in a crazy-everything-is-me-bubble, it’s just that I’m building an empire. I go on Twitter and people say ‘Yo, knock Nicki Minaj out of the box’, but ultimately we’re all helping each other and I’m happy seeing these chicks in the game.

It’s too much testosterone. When I see another female, my immediate reaction is not, ‘Oh I gotta go and get my sh*t right’. I got 900 other things going on. I can’t keep worrying about what’s coming up behind me.”

You just have to love Eve. Glad she doesn’t feel the need to tear Nicki up. Classy.

And what would Nicki Minaj say…well not much. At this point, she loves all the buzz. She tells the NY Post:

“People will pick anything to talk about, and that happens to be the thing at the moment. I love being a conversation piece.”

And Rapper Trina is set to release a new album. Entitled “Amazin,” the album will be released on May 4. Featured appearances include Monica, Diddy, Keri Hilson, and others. In addition to the album, she will also launch a beauty line entitled “Be Amazin” that will include lashes and lip gloss. The cosmetics line will hit retailers soon.

  1. Nicki Minaj has nothing on Eve, that's why she said there is no competition. Regardless of that fact, it's Nicki's time. She's new, pretty, and entertaining. She will have her moment. The only problem is they all do, and we never hear from them again. Female rappers just don't have the longevity that male rappers do.

  2. Trina is coming out with a cosmetics line? Oh lawd…These celebrities just can't stay away from the fashion and beauty lines can they? I'm glad there is finally multiple female rappers out at the same time though.
