Pepa doesn’t think Nicki Minaj is old enough to have a message behind her lyrics.

You can’t speak on the evolution of the female rap game without mentioning the legendary female rap duo Salt N’ Pepa. Widely known as one of the most successful female rap acts in the history of Hip-Hop, it should come as no surprise that the members themselves aren’t afraid to have an opinion on the current state of female rap. Salt may have given up Hip-Hop and went back to her Christian roots, but Pepa has a successful reality show and a real opinion on the increasingly popularity of Young Money sensation Nicki Minaj.
In a recent interview with Vibe Magazine, Pepa said the following regarding Nicki Minaj:
“She reminds me of [Lil’ Kim]. Bold and you know… she’s young. And a lot of people are like ‘Oh what do you feel about her because of the message?’, but to me she hasn’t learned the message yet. [Salt-n-Pepa are] old in the game, we started out a little raw, so after a little while I’ve learned and changed because my audience changed. …And what happens when you have a male camp backing you? Yeah, you might be singing those kinds of lyrics. That’s what happens when you have a male camp dictating how you should be.”
Interesting. Pepa forgot to mention that maybe the music world isn’t looking for female emcees with a message. Hopefully, that will change. If Lauryn Hill is working on a new album like insiders believe, expect the female rap game to get back to being serious.
In other news, Pepa may have succeeded in convincing Salt to return to music. In recent interviews, she has hinted that the duo are working towards a new album.
