Discussion: Black Women WANT to be fat!?

We want to know your thoughts on the controversy between Black Women and obesity.

By: A.J. Niles

More Black Women seem to be confident in their skin then ever before. It’s to the point where other people believe that they want to be fat and obese. From women getting butt injections in back alleys (word to Kim K.) to many videos and pictures, that are Photoshoped, showing women with full-figured curves, it seems that those beliefs are true.

Even major publications feel that black women want to be fat.

Alice Randall, the author, behind the Black Women and Fat article believes that “…we need is a body-culture revolution in black America.”

She feels Black Women use their curvy shapes and butts to keep their boyfriends and husbands happy. Randall writes,

How many middle-aged white women fear their husbands will find them less attractive if their weight drops to less than 200 pounds? I have yet to meet one.

[A] friend… told me that her husband, also a tenured professor and of color, begged her not to lose the sugar down below’ when she embarked on a weight-loss program.

So readers, let us know; do you all feel that Black Women WANT to be fat? If so, is it to make themselves more attractive to black men, who have a reputation of appreciating obesity over stick-figures?

  1. I know this question was for the black women, but as a man I just wanted to give my opinion on the subject. I for one am not the kind of man to push my woman to be unhealthy. I exercise regularly, and I am attracted to women with the same outlook. I know we have a reputation of preferring heavier women, but I can say its just not true for all of us. Sure I love a nice ass, but I think thick chicks are overrated and a cookie away from obesity. I love fit athletic women, and I’m not the only one either. Get healthy and date men who encourage you to be your healthiest and very best.

  2. I know plenty of sisters walking around claiming thickness and wanting to hold onto the weight because they feel like that’s what black men want. I can’t get down with that. Diabetes is a huge problem in my family and I won’t risk developing it for anyone. I work out plenty, but I’m no size zero. Black women can be fit and sexy.

  3. Im a thick girl and proud of it! I don’t understand why black women have to fit European standards of skinniness! And D, you prefer mascular shaped women over big thighs and curves?! Are you gay?

    1. Since when was being thin something European, I’m sorry but being thin or fat only has to do with what you eat, not your race or ethnicity. Only thing we black women can thank God about is that for the most part, when we gain weight, it’s not evenly distributed all over, making us look like an O, but at least it’s good to be healthy. Being healthy is not European, its logical.

  4. Lee Lee please grow up. How is being skinny or not fat a white thing? Then you assume a man is gay because he prefers someone who loves exercising as much as him? You have more issues than weight. Just sayin.

  5. Nah, what Lee Lee meant is she’s a fat ass, and enjoys pretending that any man not interested in her is “gay.” See kids, even I can childishly and innacurately label someone on the Internet because I’m too lazy to add to the conversation.

  6. I feel like this: While yes, we need to have black women more confident in their own skin, we also need them aware of their health and taking care of themselves. Obesity, diabetes and heart disease are rampant in the black community. Just like we need women to be aware of their blood pressure and blood sugar levels just like we need them to know their H.I.V. status and do do things to protect themselves.

  7. I have big hips, ass, breasts, and I make no apologies for it. Curvaceous women are celebrated in our culture, even in our music. We tend to be proud of our curves despite the European agenda. What’s wrong with that?!

  8. Lee Lee I’m not gay because I prefer a woman who enjoys exercise. But I’m sure you’re the same type of a black woman who thinks any black man who isn’t a thug is gay too. You’re not even worth a response, so I’ll leave it short.

  9. I think more of us are starting to get away from the mindset that obesity is ok and sexy. Me and my girlfriends work out all the time, run, and eat healthy. I know originally we thought the media was picking on us and our genetics, but it’s really not healthy in the long run to be overweight. Take care yourself ladies.

  10. I don’t want to be obese, thick, or whatever the hell you want to call it. Weight loss for me is a struggle, I was born with some weight on me. I’m not sure who came up with the idiotic idea that most black women want weight problems. Besides, most of the black men I know that prefer heaviness are usually losers.

  11. Somebody got it all twisted. Black men don’t like fat women, we like fat asses. When you tell us you’re losing weight, what do we say? Answer- “just don’t lose the ass!”

  12. Low key, there are plenty of men that go after and love to date plus-sized women. However, there are quite a few that do this because plus-sized women are perceived as “easy” to them.
