Just as current NFL players are going to off-season practices, Nate Webster is getting ready for a 12 year prison sentence. Webster, a former Linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals, was sentenced recently for having sex with the teenage daughter of his former coach. CBS news is reporting that a jury in Hamilton County, Ohio convicted him in April on four counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, however, he could have been sentenced to up to 20 years.
CBS news writes:
Prosecutors said Webster had sex with the girl in 2009 when she was 15 and threatened to harm her if she told anyone. Webster admitted having sex with the teen the next year when she was 16, which is the legal age of consent in Ohio.
Nate Webster’s attorney, Gregory Samms, tells CBS that the ruling will be appealed on the basis that the charges and sentence are excessive.
“He was overcharged for what actually took place, which was a consensual agreement between two people. It was a consensual act and everything else was a fabrication.”
Webster’s attorney is claiming that the teenager lied about her age and Webster and his defense rejected a plea deal which would have sent him to prison for four years.
The Prosecutor will stand behind the ruling of the court. They feel the sentence fits the crime Webster was charged with and will fight any appeal attempts
According to CBS:
Prosecutors said Webster told police that he had sex with the girl when she was 15 and played tapes of those interviews in court but Samms said Webster was mistaken about the dates in his earlier statements.
Webster played in the NFL from 2000 – 2008, which included stints with the Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
