Wyclef Jean stirred up quite a bit of controversy once he made the announcement that he was releasing his tell-all book Purpose. And while discussing aspects of his book, Wyclef came clean about some details about his past during his time as a member of rap group The Fugees that many fans of the former group were in the dark about, one of the main things being the affair that he had with ex-band mate Lauryn Hill. Wyclef publicly admitted to sleeping with Lauryn and even went on to claim that Lauryn had him believing that he was the father of her child. His words did not go over well with Lauryn Hill’s ex Rohan Marley, who called Wyclef out , saying that Wyclef knew the whole time that the baby was his. Lauryn eventually stepped in to address the talk surrounding her name during one of her shows that she did while on tour with Nas. Regardless of being called out by the two, Wyclef has continued to stick to his word about what went down between him and Lauryn. And as he has been so open about the whole romantic affair that he had, in a recent interview that he did with Power 106, Wyclef opened up about how Pras, the third member of the group, felt about him messing with Lauryn and how it affected the group as a whole:
“I’m sure he definitely blames me, you know what I’m saying? You know, and if you go back to the old articles, one time where Pras was like ‘Yo, man ‘Clef was the cancer of the Fugees’, you know. Remember when he said that?”
And he spoke about the warning that Pras gave him about getting involved with Lauryn beyond the business level:
“At the time, you gotta understand his frustration though, you feel me? It was more like ‘Yo, you know I really wanted this thing to work and you shouldn’t have messed with the girl. Matter of fact, didn’t I warn you about messin’ with the girl?'”
Years after their break-up, Wyclef admits that the affair that he had with Lauryn played a huge part in the demise of one the best Hip-Hop groups of the ’90’s:
“Fully looking back then, now as a man and looking back, definitely take blame in the sense of having fell for Lauryn at the time. But you know, in my form of artistry, and a lot of times, like we read these stories and we go and read whether it’s like Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell, or even back to the days of Rome or mythology with Zeus and whoever he fell for .We always think like ‘Nah, this ain’t never gonna to happen to us.’ But what happens is until you are actually sitting in the seat, like you’ve seen it with the preacher and somebody in the congregation, you’ve seen it with the businessman and the secretary…So it was important that I explained it in the sense of vulnerability, meaning like, not as ‘Feel sorry for me’ type of dude but as human beings…”
There were many rumors going around about what caused The Fugees to break up. Wyclef Jean however says that blame can be placed squarely on his shoulders.
He should take the blame because he should have never done it! He was a married man and Lauryn clearly was young and didn’t need to be caught up in that. I honestly feel like he was a predator in the situation because she was so young when it all went down. Oh well. They were a great group but everything happens for a reason.
So he’s still trying to get some attention for that raggedy a-s book of his.
He should have kept it in his pants.
He’s so annoying.
I wish he would go sit down somewhere. We get it. You screwed Lauryn. Now the group’s done because of it. Please find something else to talk about and write a book on.
It’s amazing how he has to use Lauryn’s name to sell books and get interviews. How sad.
Ugh he gets on my nerves!!!!!
