Michael Jackson’s childhood or “lack thereof” has always been one of the things that will be most remembered about the late musical legend. Michael’s father Joe Jackson has always been painted as an abusive father to his children, and Michael blames his father for a lack of a childhood since he felt his father made them put their careers ahead of being children. Regardless of how Michael and the rest of the Jackson family felt about Joe’s parenting skills, Joe stands by how he raised his children. And in a recent interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan, he claims he feels he was the “right kind of parent,” especially since none of his children went to jail. He also says that he thinks that most of the parents of today’s society are too soft.

Joe tells Piers Morgan:

“One of the reasons I say that is because kids nowadays are killing their parents in some cases. Let’s get into this ‘beating’ thing. There’s no such thing as ‘beating a kid.’ You whip them or punish them over something they did, and they will remember that. And they’ll remember it in such a way that they won’t do it again. That’s the way I was.”

Joe also takes pride in his children because he feels they were able to do some amazing things in their careers and they have established such a legacy in the music industry that he just refuses to consider himself as a bad parent.

  1. I agree that kids these days do need more a-s whoopings, but he’s still not that great of a parent in my book.

  2. Are that many black men going to jail that Joe feels his kids not becoming criminals makes him a decent parent?

  3. Kids do need to be disciplined and I do think parents are a lot more softer now than they were before BUT Joe took things too far. His kids may not have criminal records, but they do have MAJOR ISSUES. So he needs to really sit down somewhere and be quiet. We read about his crazy family all the time.

  4. Joe’s a little extreme, but I do agree with what he says. Parents are too soft nowadays and whoopings help mold children into people with morals if they are done right. Say what you want about Michael and his siblings but they never got into any real trouble. They all became legends whether it was through the Jackson 5 or solo projects. He has a lot to do with that. Michael learned his work ethic from how he was raised. Janet too.
