Kanye West vowed off doing any press a couple of years ago, however, he made an exception the other day when he called in to a radio station just hours after the “Hottest MCs” list was released which was put together by MTV. Kanye landed the number seven spot, and he wasn’t too happy that he and Big Sean didn’t make the top 5. Instead, Young Money frontrunner Drake landed the number five spot, and Kanye’s artist Big Sean landed the number six pot. While some artists would still see being ranked seventh as an accomplishment, Kanye is furious and had no qualms calling into Hot 97 to tell DJ Enuff what he really felt about MTV’s controversial list.

According to Kanye, he doesn’t feel MTV took into consideration all of his best verses. He says:

“To me, I feel like in order for them to put me as #7, they had to bring up things that they didn’t like. Like they didn’t like the Cruel Summer album, and I’m like, ‘That’s just [a] compilation — it ain’t all rappers on G.O.O.D. Music.

“I mean, Cruel Summer got “[I] Don’t Like” remix, “Mercy,” “Cold,” “New God Flow,” oh and “Clique”! You can’t name five records like that on no album. But they wanna dis me, and be like, ‘He did Cruel Summer, and he can’t say he ain’t part of it ’cause he did eight records. … Ain’t nobody bringing up that [Rihanna] “Diamonds” remix verse, like there was no verse in a year that was fu*kin’ with that verse!”

Kanye then suggested he’s not getting the recognition he deserves because people don’t like the fact that he’s dating Kim Kardashian:

“I don’t know, it’s definitely not based on a body of work. It possibly could just be like overall rap-MC-swag, you know what I’m saying? Sean is a great rapper, period; it checks all the boxes. What happens is with these types of things … as soon as you come in like, I had the pink Polo and the backpack, then I’m checking all the boxes of that Tribe Called Quest era and J Dilla and all that, So they wanna champion it. They don’t like ‘Givenchy Kanye,’ they don’t like Kanye in a kilt, they don’t like Kanye in a relationship.

“I don’t think it’s them really going bar-for-bar: I said, ‘Lucky I didn’t have Jay drop him from the team!’Ain’t no bar, ain’t no bar in the entire past four months hotter than that bar. That’s one bar! I come from this battle rap; that’s how I grew up. I’m from Chicago.”

Oh it gets better. Kanye then goes off suggesting that he should have been higher up on the list because he gave Sway of MTV News his first TV:

“I gave Sway his first TV, man. He came over my crib in Newark, New Jersey. I was getting a new TV and I gave Sway his first TV. I didn’t want to even call to talk about this #7 list, I just wanted to tell everybody I gave Sway his first TV — and he need to remember that.”

Kanye promptly hung up the phone quickly after.

  1. Uh his verses aren’t as hot as he thinks they are. When actually sit down and listen to what he’s saying, it’s complete trash.

  2. I like Kanye but he hasn’t been a dope lyricist since his first album in my opinion. And I think someone says he uses a ghostwriter, so he needs to humble himself.

  3. I believe that the loss of his mom just made the real Kanye come about. I believe she is what kept him as grounded as he was (which he was still kind of a jerk) and when he lost that, he lost himself. Dating Kim K only made things worse. She is a whole issue in her own right.

  4. He has such a delusional view of himself. He’s never been all that great as a rapper. A producer, yes. A rapper, nah. And LOL at him saying Lil Wayne is on the same level as Eminem and Hov. Chile bye.

  5. You know, if we push aside how annoying he is, he was right when he said we don’t like the Kanye he is now. We don’t like that he wears kilts on stage, that he dates superficial industry trams like Kim, nor do we like what he raps about now. He is the very superficial person he preached against on his first album. And for that, he’s lost the respect of many.

  6. This saddens me. Kanye had the potential to be higher than #7 on that list. I’ve been a fan and supported all his albums up until “My Twisted Dark Fantasy.” He was a lyricist. His songs made you think, vibe, etc. I definitely attribute his change to the passing of his mother, but it’s crazy how his art changed but his sense of entitlement didn’t. Well, I guess it did, in that it has become so much worse. Kanye is expecting accolades based on past work when his current stuff is subpar (in comparison to what he’s capable of) and his character and personality are in the pits!! I’m so over this dude. Wasted potential he is indeed. I’m beyond his comeback as an artist. I’m just hoping he come back to reality before his kid is born. Because I can’t see him as a father. Dude’s spazometer is through the roof.

  7. What a Diva…..is falling down since he started dating Kim K….and he’ll fall down further…SMH

  8. All you kanye haters need a life. If it weren’t for the Taylor Swift incident where people though a black man was interrupting an :”innocent” white girl and him dating kim Kardashian you people would still like Kanye West. He should be in the top 3 on that list. He has not done or said anything wrong for you guys to be bashing him like this everyday. I’m happy hes successful and doesn’t care what you bummy haters think.

  9. Kanye is sadly mistaken if he thinks this is about Kim or Taylor Swift…he just isn’t as great as he used to be as a LYRICIST. He raps about materialistic sh-t when he came on the scene rapping about things like Jesus, beating materialism, and how f-cked up George Bush is. People are disappointed and he’s too extremely different than who we loved before. It’s like if Nas woke up one day and started rapping about bad b-tches…it would make his fan base question him. He did that one album where he tried to be commercial and it FLOPPED. This is how it is. When you’re an artist and you lose yourself, people take notice and they won’t support. It ain’t about being a “real” fan. It’s about being a “real” artist, and Kanye hasn’t been that since his first two albums. Truth hurts.

  10. He’s a lost soul. All his friends need to have him committed into a mental institution because he really needs help. He is clearly still hurting from his mother’s death and he needs a major time out!
