Actress Halle Berry might still be working on proving she can handle the role of leading actress in a film and still manage box office success, but the Hollywood beauty’s personal life is one of a survivor. Halle’s love life has been pretty dramatic, and she hasn’t had the best luck with men. Even though she’s now happily engaged to Olivier Martinez, she had a nasty custody battle with her daughter Nahla’s father Gabriel Aubry. Things got so nasty that her fiancé and Gabriel ended up getting in a brutal fight, and all of the drama just clarified to Halle that she hasn’t made the best decisions when it comes to men; but she credits all of that to her terrible relationship with her father.

In a recent interview with The Inquirer, Halle explains that she had to get therapy to get past the rocky relationship she had with her father:

“I’ve always done therapy on an as needed basis since I was 10 years old. My father was an alcoholic, and a very abusive one. My mother knew the value of providing me an outlet—an unbiased person to talk to, to help me manage my feelings and emotions. So, I’ve done that throughout my life. If I feel like I need to, I do meditation. I find that our mind is really powerful. What we think and what our thoughts are can really control our reality—how we look at things.”

Halle also says that she managed to deal with all the stress surrounding the Gabriel and Olivier situation:

“I’m always the person that handles it so well that most people don’t even think I’m having a problem. I’ve learned how to mask it or deal with it internally and not wear it on my sleeve. I try really hard not to take it out on others.”

Halle also admitted that although she didn’t get the judge to agree to allow her and her daughter to move to Paris, she still hasn’t given up on making the city her home someday. Halle says she plans to make the move herself when Nahla is 18 and goes off to college:

“When my daughter is 18 years old and off to college, I can do exactly what I want. At some point, I do believe that I will end up in Paris. That’s where I am going to end my days, that’s for sure.”
