Janelle Monae has already made it clear that she’s not like most singers. And when it comes to her music, she takes it very seriously. So seriously that she won’t allow anything, including herself to distract anyone away from it. So in order to keep people focused on her music and her music only, she’s committed to wearing modest black and white outfits, and says that concealing her body will force people to focus solely on her material. She tells Elle Canada:

“The colours come out in your music, the colours come out in your personality, the colours come out in performance. I started wearing this uniform, to be perfectly honest, because I have an amazing body.

“I’m serious – I’m not playing. When I look at myself in the mirror, I’m attractive. I really have a nice body. And I had to pick: Do I want them to focus on my body? Do I want them to focus on how curvy and really, really gorgeous my figure is? Or do I want them to look at my music? What has more value? And I made that decision. I want them to focus on the message and the music because I feel like I have a higher calling.”

Janelle is sticking to her promise and has managed to pull off sexy and fierce while keeping her clothes on in her new music video for her current single “Q.U.E.E.N.” with her musical bff Erykah Badu. On collaborating with Erykah, she says:

“I just love her. We call each other twins. I talk to her on the phone at least three or four times a week. It was really inspired by our private conversation, dialogue that she and I have and continue to have. … She’s a strong woman, she’s an electric lady, she’s somebody that I look up to.”

Janelle’s rap at the end just confirms to us that she is very well on her way to becoming a huge star.
