Kerry Washington probably had no idea the ABC drama she stars in would become the hit show that it has become. “Scandal” is another successful product of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice” creator Shonda Rhimes, and it’s because of the very popular show that Washington landed her very first Emmy nomination. If you still aren’t convinced “Scandal” is a very big deal, we encourage you to just check out your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds when the show is on. Although the hit series is currently on a hiatus before it returns for its third season, people are already predicting what drama will unfold next and if Olivia and Fitz are really done.

Although plenty of people love the show, it doesn’t mean it isn’t a target of backlash. In fact, there are numerous critics of Liv and Fitz’s romance, especially since Fitz was clearly married when he began his passionate affair with the show’s lead character.

While people may love Kerry Washington and most root for her success, her character Olivia Pope has been labeled everything from a side chick to a jumpoff by lots of viewers. Kerry made it clear in a recent interview with Wendy Williams that she isn’t fond of the labels, and she actually doesn’t think Olivia is side piece but actually the real love of Fitz’s life.

When people aren’t calling Olivia a side piece, some of the critics are suggesting the high-profile romance between Fitz and Liv condones adultery and the show’s creator Shonda Rhimes says in a recent interview that she doesn’t agree with that sentiment at all. She tells TV Line:

“I don’t feel like we’re making adultery acceptable. We weren’t setting out to make adultery OK. To me it’s not about adultery or not adultery. We’re telling the story of these two characters who very specifically have this kind of relationship.

“We tell all sides. So while there are times when you’re like, ‘Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) and Liv are wonderful and I want them to be together,’ there are also times you think, ‘Fitz is scum and he shouldn’t be cheating on his wife.’ And there are times you think, ‘Olivia should go off and find herself somebody who’s single.'”

Shonda also reveals that she appreciates the fact that the show draws such an intense debate surrounding Olivia and Fitz’s romance:

“I like the fact that everybody feels this big debate. That’s fantastic, because that’s the point. We’re not giving a judgement on it one way or the other.”

When asked what will become of Olivia and Fitz in the upcoming season, Shonda says, “It’s not finished.”

  1. I always thought this was a stupid opinion to have. Scandal isn’t the only show to have characters cheating on spouses, but yet it gets all the blame for condoning adultery. GTFOH.

    1. Agreed. It’s just not that serious to me. I think it’s a great show and only grown people should be watching this anyway. LOL.

  2. It is only a TV show. A scripted show that is for entertainment purposes. Nothing more, nothing less. If your morals come from a scripted show then maybe one needs to rethink that. I am so ready for it to come back on.
