Female rapper and business woman Nicki Minaj might still be the frontrunner of the female rap game, but that doesn’t mean she feels like she’s being taken seriously by her male counterparts. In fact, Nicki has said on several occasions that it’s very difficult for women to excel in Hip Hop and she even felt the need to shut down rumors suggesting she slept her way to the top. But in a recent interview with the Power 105.1’s Breakfast Club crew amid her performance at Powerhouse this weekend,  she finally broke her silence on Kendrick Lamar’s controversial rap verse in Big Sean’s track “Control.” And from the looks of the quotes, many are thinking she feels insulted that her name wasn’t mentioned. She says:

“I’m probably in the top five of the n*ggas he did mention, so go and do your motherf*cking research. But, I also feel like he maybe one of those respectful gentlemen that probably felt like ‘I don’t want to say a female’s name.’ Or maybe he just don’t think the kid is ill. But the kid knows the kid is ill, so I don’t need to be on anybody’s d*ck.

“I’m the queen of New York. I’m the king of New York. Let me tell you why. Platinum albums. Albums plural. Number one in five motherf*cking countries, n*gga. Don’t play with me. You better respect my motherf*cking gangsta, b*tch. When you got an album that goes number one in Japan, the UK, Australia, America and Canada at the same motherf*cking time, then you can speak my motherf*cking name.”

She also addressed her very “out there” behavior as of late on Instagram as well:

“I’ve just been feeling a lot freer. If you feeling yourself, you might just want to show the world.”

Nicki later took to her Twitter account and suggested her comments on Kendrick Lamar were “all in fun.” She tweets:

Lol. I’m going to post the full interview. It was all in fun. For the record, Hov is the king of NY in my eyes.

Interestingly enough, Kendrick Lamar actually paid homage to Lil Kim and brought her out on stage during his set at Powerhouse while Nicki was a surprise guest brought on stage by Meek Mill.

  1. I honestly don’t think Kendrick was trying to shade Nicki by not mentioning her. It’s usually frowned upon for male rappers to call out female rappers. But Nicki can outrap most of the people he named! And that’s the truth!

  2. Yea she just salty because Kendrick brought out Lil’ Kim. I still can’t believe we are still on this control verse. Another case of a rapper’s insecurities brought out by Kendrick Lamar lol.

    1. Girl I know she was heated. But Kendrick was just showing respect to the biggest female rapper of the time during his childhood.

  3. Yeah she does sound salty. And what does having platinum records have to do with being a great lyricist? Nothing at all. Jay outsold Nas but Nas is still better than him on the mic. Just saying.

  4. Wow people are still talking about that verse? You got some people mad their name was brought up (Drake) and now some are mad their name wasn’t brought up (Nicki, 2 Chainz, etc.). Sheesh.

  5. He didn’t mention her because she hasn’t left that much of an influence in any of her songs or collabs. She’s not terrible but she’s not as dope as she thinks she is. She should work more on her bars than showing her a-s and nips on Instagram.

  6. If Nicki spent as much time on her verses/music as she did trying to upstage Kim Kardashian on Instagram, then just maybe the other rappers would take her more seriously. But now every time they see her she’s damn near naked, twerking and showing off her fake booty and breasts. It’s hard to take an emcee seriously when they are too busy trying to be a sex symbol than work the mic. That’s what these women need to understand. If you choose to get naked and do some ho ish a little too much, you lose your credibility and just became someone these men just want to look at and jerk off too.

  7. 1. She has way too many personalities and voices for me to even take her seriously when she raps.
    2. Can someone please tell this bish that album sales don’t mean sh-t in Hip Hop. It’s about who has those bars and who doesn’t. And she does not. Her best verse was that Monster joint and even that was all over the place.

  8. If she thinks bringing up album sales is necessary when talking about who is a great in Hip Hop, she’s missed the whole point.
