While there are many people who would like to believe that we live in a post racial America considering the president is a black man, situations such as the Trayvon Martin case and the continuous killings of African-Americans due to racial profiling prove otherwise. In fact, a new situation involving the killing of a young Detroit woman is not only tragic, but a painful reminder that this country has a long way to go when it comes to the current state of racial relations.
Renisha McBride got into a car accident a little bit before 2:30 am on Saturday in Dearbron Heights, Michigan; and she decided to exit the vehicle and seek help from people who live nearby the crash. She knocked on a stranger’s door hoping she could get some help, but seconds later her knock was met with gun shots. McBride was shot in the head and killed on the stranger’s porch.
The killer told police his gun accidentally went off as Renisha stood on his porch, and he thought she was trying to break in his home. Cops are also telling the press that Renisha was shot in the face, close to her mouth and not in the back of the head, therefore refuting what her family is telling the media.
Renisha’s aunt thinks her niece’s death was a tragic result of racial profiling and she says the white man who killed Renisha only did so because she was black. Bernita Spinks tells Detroit News:
“He shot her in the head … for what? For knocking on his door. If he felt scared or threatened, he should have called 911. … She went looking for help and now she’s dead.”
McBride’s loved ones describe the deceased 19-year-old as a quiet and hardworking young woman.
The name of the killer has not yet been released, and it has been reported that Michigan has some version of the “Stand Your Ground Law.” It hasn’t yet been determined if the shooter will be charged.

This man is a liar and he’s pulling a George Zimmerman. He didn’t shoot her on accident, he intended to get out that bullet. He deserves to burn in hell.

Every time I hear a story like this it just hurts my heart. First the football player in Florida now this young lady. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong but robbers don’t knock on the front door and ask for help. R.I.P Renisha.

This is so sad and disturbing on so many levels. I seriously doubt this man thought he was being robbed. He just saw an opportunity to make it one less black person in the world, so he took his opportunity. He’s less than a human being. I hope this young woman gets justice, but I know better.

I can’t even imagine what her loved ones are feeling right now. I can’t believe some people are so full of hate that they would take a life in this way.

We spend so much money and time trying to make other countries live in peace and respect each others differences but we live in the most racist, hateful, uncivilized countries in the free w toorld. We want everyone to be like America because we are supposed to be setting some kind of example but the reality is this country breeds hate and violence. Blacks are now fourth class citizens in a country that was built on the backs of slaves. A black life in this country has no value. Regardless of who’s in the White House, how much money we make or how many black soldiers die for this country. The matter how we try and live right we will continue to be statistic in life and just a number when we die. My heart bleeds for her family. She’s in a much better place away from all this crazy.
