It is with sadness that Urban Belle can confirm that legendary poet and writer Maya Angelou has passed away. According to multiple reports, the 86-year-old died due to a sudden illness.

TMZ reports:

Maya Angelou — one of America’s most famous poets — died last night in a Winston-Salem, North Carolina hospital while recovering from a mystery sickness.

Angelou was recovering from an “unexpected ailment” that sent her to the hospital. She died with family by her side.

Maya is well-known for poems “Phenomenal Woman” and “Still I Rise,” as well as her autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”

She will truly be missed.

  1. She was a Phenomenal Woman and I loved her poems. Her autobiography is also a very good read as well.

  2. Now if Solange can see a bump in sales for karate chopping Jay Z, I surely hope Maya’s book sales will see a even bigger increase because her words are powerful and heal the spirit.
