With the enormous success of ABC’s “Scandal” and “Modern Family,” the major network is planning to add to its roster of successful television programming with an all black sitcom.
“Black-ish” stars Tracee Ellis Ross and comedian Anthony Anderson and the show centers around a father’s quest to make his family better embrace their “blackness.”
Both cover the September issue of JET for its “40 under 40 list.”
JET writes:
Unlike the Cosby Show, black-ish explores how a well-to-do African-American family in a predominately White neighborhood deals with maintaining their Black cultural identity while also “assimilating” into the culture of their neighbors.
“I think it’s a lovely thing that we’re being compared to something as great as The Cosby Show was at its time, but we’re not trying to emulate them,” said Anderson about the show.
Anderson will play the family’s father, Andre Johnson, and Ross will play his wife, Rainbow Johnson.
Also in the issue, JET reveals the publication’s “40 Under 40″ list, which includes the most influential movers and shakers in the African-American community under the age of 40. The list includes individuals who have household names to those who may actually live next door. The young men from the Jackie Robinson West Little League team, who won over the hearts of many Americans, are included in the list for being the first all-Black team to win the national championship in the Little League World Series.
The JET September issue is now available in Apple, Google Play and Amazon stores for download. “Black-ish” was created by Kenya Barris and the show is set to premiere on ABC September 24 at 9:30pm. Check out the trailer below:
it’s an all black cast and made by the same people who created Modern Family. I’m giving it a chance.
Exactly. Besides, Modern Family is one of my favorite shows. I laugh each episode.
There will never be another Cosby Show but I won’t judge this show yet without seeing a full episode. I wasn’t ecstatic by the idea of Modern Family, but I’m hooked now.
Yes! I just started watching modern family about 3 months ago and I’m hooked.
Yeah I think I started last year and I just started binge watching it. Couldn’t get enough.
Ha me too.
Nope.
I hate the name of this show. But I think they are going to be similar to the Modern Family premise and push the envelop a lot. People were offended by Modern Family at first but it’s so hilarious and well written that it works. I hope I will be able to say the same about this show.
*envelope*
The name of the show is suspect, but I think it could be funny.
I had MAJOR issues with the name at first too, cuz I was waiting for the buffoonery to pop off. But I really enjoy that Tracy and Anthony are part of an all black cast, and it’s written by the Modern Family folks. Might actually be funny, if they get it right.
Hell as many ratchet reality shows I watch I’m definitely going to tune in and give this show a chance. Just saying.
That’s how I feel. I know some people are already trashing this show based off the premise and title but they watch all the reality shows faithfully. How hypocritical.
lolololol same here.
Looks like it could be funny.
This show just seems corny to me but Tracee’s hair is perfect on that cover. Her hair is always on point it’s never frizzy not a hair out of place just flawless.
IDK…looks like it may be just ok but I’ll at least watch the first episode.
It’s an all black cast so I’m supporting.
Now that I saw the trailer I’m thinking I could like the show. And I love me some Tracee Ellis Ross. She’s my hair crush. LOL!
Look decent and Laurence Fishburne has his hand in it so I have to give it at least one season.
I don’t care for the name but the preview gives me hope.
I’m watching!
Watching for Tracee Ellis Ross.
